245/70 is a good size if you dont plan on cutting guards and will correct the speedo accuracy.
You'd have to go pretty big to affect the tdi economy.

Hello everyone,
New to the forum. I've got a 99 Disco 1 TDI300 with an ARB bar and a 2" OME suspension lift. I'm running the standard tyre size in the 205's and am looking to put some muddies or allies on it to suit the stance a bit better and a bit of grip would be nice too. As far as I know you can fit 31" or the equivalent on the Disco with the 2" lift, but what is worrying me is the impact a bigger tyre will have on the performance of the vehicle, and it's economy. Any feedback on what the bigger tyres have done to other vehicles would be greatly appreciated. Mine is a manual and not the fastest vehicle around with nearly 300ks on the clock.
Thanking you
Dave

And if you want to go bigger you can fit 265/75/16s but they will require a slight modification to the guards, you can get them to fit by doing a "camel cut" to the rear guards.
I'm running the same size as these but in a 235/85/16 (32"). They came with the car when I bought it some 8mths ago. Mines a Auto so it might not be a fair comparo but my fuel Avg is 11.5ltrs/100kms (best 9.5 & worst 12.6) and that's taking into account the 9.6% increase in tyre size. My engine to my knowledge is standard and goes quite well for a Tdi300 (from what my cousin has told me comparing it to his std one running std tyres). Mine has a lift kit + the Camel Cut on the rear.....
When it comes to replacing the tyres, I will consider trying the 265/75/16 size as I reckon they are more common to buy and therefore cheaper + I reckon they "may be" a bit more stable on the road too as I do find the 235/85/16 a little bit more concerning in the wet (handling/braking).
What you have to do to fit a particular tyre size is well documented in other threads.
The tyre size that suits best depends on what you use it for. So what do you want to do with it?

IMHO 245.75x16 is the ideal for a RRC or D1.
A D1 will need a camel cut to the rear guards and maybe the lock stops adjusted a bit to clear the leading arms.
This gives 5% higher gearing .
And I reckon BFG ATKO are the duck's guts. 30K on my 255.70x16 on D2 and 9 to 10MM tread remaining.

If you ever want to tow anything, that is about as high as you would want to go. Or maybe like the towing payload of a transit 1.7 back in the old days." Load is 200 canaries, and hit side of trailer when going uphill." as answered by my mate who was commercial manager at Ford Australia at the time.

Yeah I'm running 245 75 16 with a 30mm heavy duty spring lift no camel cut in a 300tdi Disco.

Wait till you bounce it one day - the guards will "self adjust"...
Lift alone doesn't allow bigger rubber - however a very stiff rate may reduce the likelihood that you can flex enough to contact.
A flexible coil will allow panel damage without the cut, but will perform better...
Thanks everyone for your help, I've decided to go with the 245/70 as I don't want to cut the guards![]()
I would be to worried to cut the guards. It only requires a small amount cut from behind the rear wheel. About 30 mm at the bottom tapering back into the wheel arch line. Mark it, put on a bit of tape and a cutting bit in the grinder, job done. It doesn't look out of place. Search for Camel Cut for some tutorials. This will open up more choice in tyres.
You still have not mentioned what you want to use them for. I find about 31" a good all round size for on and off road. I liked my 31x10.5/15 but if you want to use your standard rims some 245x75/16. Off set is also something to watch out for, come out to far and you will need flares.
Cheers, David.
