Im thinking about changing my exhaust soon because the flex pipe coming from the turbo is getting a bit sad looking and am curious as to what people have done?
Should i get a 2 1/2 straight through running a hot dog silencer?
On the bigger rigs i have seen people running three inch straight through but i dont think i need to go that crazy? Do i?
What makes the engine perform the best? Has anyone done so? I dont really mind about noise as everything else rattles too! haha
Any tips and advice or thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

60mm is fairly close to 2 1/2" so thats good. I thought it was thinner than that. Does the flex piece have to be there? Because i dont think it is on the defenders?
It's generally used with a turbo. It costs about $30 extra if you're doing something else at the same time. Newer flexes also seem much better than the one on the discovery.
Thanks for your replies. Well it cant hurt to have it in there really can it if I'm keeping the same width tubing. Im sure its there for a reason :S Ill have a talk with my exhaust shop and see what they think too.
Got my flex coupling replaced with a generic from a muffler shop, 2 1/2" fits over the standard pipe ok. Given that they tend to shred from vibration, I guess the alternative being none at all would be pipes cracking from vibration. Also anything that keeps the vibes and noise down in the cab is good.
Also, I put a straight through round muffler in the middle to replace the baffled standard, I did not want additional resonance but did want the free flow. I left the rear in place as it is straight through anyway.
Any increase in power doing the exhaust?
a larger exhaust will let the turbo spool up much faster, you will have to re-tune the injector pump for the fuel to match to get the extra performance.
There are a few threads around, where some much more knowledgable people weighed in. Searching on the phone is just too slow to post a link right now.
Basically the cosensus was that going any larger than the turbo outlet size is a waste of time, generates a lot more noise for little, if any, extra power.
The biggest performance gain is in improving gas flow. Cheapest is to get rid of the centre muffler, then iirc mucking around with where the dump pipe goes past the engine mount. Then looking at a complete re do of the system. Unless you want a horrid resonance in the cab, or plan to put a different turbo on, stick with stock diameter pipe
