    Brake problem

    G'day.

My Disco, which I dont drive all that often has developed a problem.

When I put my foot on the brake it is very hard and hardly slows the vehicle up.
I pump the pedal and it is suddenly normal and brakes okay ?

When I start the vehicle I can press on the brake and it slowly gets softer but at the same time the rev's drop and the engine allmost stalls ?

Could the brakes need bleeding or do you think the brake booster needs replacing ?

The large vacuum hose going over to the booster is okay.

    Ta.

booster valving is shot and its leaking vacuum to the intae manifold after the butterfly upsetting the fuel ratio which is why the revs drop.

pumping the pedal resets the valve on the re-aplication so you get some boost but once the valve is in the balance position it leaks again.

    Thanks.

I will try to source a new booster at a good price.

Pull the old one out, inspect it for damage to the housing and if the main housing is still ok order the service kit for the booster and rebuild it.

You might be lucky and get away with a dis-assemble and clean, i did that on my old rangie and it was working properly afterwards for years until i sold it.

    I hadn't thought of that.

I didn't know those kits were available.

Who would stock them do you know ?

I would see if it just needs a clean but after I purchased the service kit.

    Thanks.

You can get a booster rebuild kit from roverparts but its probably just your non-return valve that's gone. They have them too.

    mr automotive 0732846688.

its not the one way valve, if it was just the one way valve youd only have the problem if you tried to brake after loosing manifold vacuum.

that said the one way valve could also be gone.

to check the one way valve run the engine up and get the brakes working normally, turn the engine off and count to 5 then aply the brakes again.

you should get at least one full assisted application of the brakes..

if everything is working perfectly with the engine off the vacuum should be retained over night and you'll get 2 fully assisted applications of the brakes.
