    Brake lines on D1?

Hi, I am in the process of swapping over axles from my written off 8/93 disco onto my new project 2/99 disco. They are both D1's but seem to have different brake hose set ups. The earlier one is a 3.9L but with the multi belt set up and the later one is 300tdi.

    A couple of questions:
    - did they change the braking system during the 94 update? The earlier disco has 2 hoses running to each front wheel where as the 2/99 one has only 1 hose going to each front wheel.
    - has anyone swapped older axles into an updated model? Where there any dramas?
    - would I be able to modify the brakes to work with duel brake lines or would the 2/99 calipers fit on the 8/93 axles (discs) without too much modification.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Early model Discos like yours had the twin brake lines, they also have 3 bleed nipples, the one on the outside is usually obscured by the wheel. This leads to this nipple not being bled and may never had been bled, this leads to water and sludge building up in this caliper piston, which will lead to loss of brakes if the brakes get hot enough. They need to be bled according to instructions in w/shop manual, use your old 2 line calipers, Regards Frank.

Thanks Frank. Your response may have shed light on a previous brake failure. I didn't notice a 3rd nipple on the wheel side and never did a brake flush in the 2 years I had it so may never have been flushed properly in its 22 yr life.

Does anyone know if the mountings for the newer calipers would be the same for the older ones. Eg could I fit the newer model calipers on the older axles? Do they bolt on to the same mountings without modifications.

    Cheers,
    Damian

The mountings are the same, but changing calipers, esp. the early 3 nipple ones may cause problems.
The brake system on early discos worked in conjunction with the rear brakes when ever there was a brake failure, one half of the front brakes worked with the rear brakes, very confusing, but one of the reasons for the weird bleeding system on the front brakes, would pay to get hold of a w/shop (genuine LR/Rave) manual/disk, it has a diagram of how it works, Regards Frank.

If the brakes aren't bled as above you may lose brakes altogether as I did while going down into Bendethra, very scary in an Auto, Regards frank.

Are the axles from the 93 something worthwhile? If they are stock, it Seems like you are regressing in technology. As I understand it, the pre 94 trucks are 10 spline axles. (we never got pre 94 discos over here, so I cant personally confirm)

Hi money pit, the reason behind the swap is the 93 axles have air lockers installed in them from my previous disco. It is a different locker in the 94 onwards so have to swap complete axle or fork out another $4000 for lockers again. It is purely to save cash and I have these ones lying around from my old build.
