    Head Gasket Elring

    Hi folks

Leaking head gasket back end. This was actually leaking when I recently purchased the vehicle but was hardly audible, I thought it was exhaust gasket, now its worse and air is pushing out the back of the head/block interface.....so off with the head it will be.

Is ELRING a good head gasket brand?

    Cheers

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

Having recently done my head in my 300tdi D1 as it overheated I used an Elring, and after seeing the quality of the gasket would not use anything else. As for swapping the head over - the 300 tdi was the easiest vehicle I have ever worked on. Other than bleeding the clutch today, but that's another story!

Elring is very good. On replacement of older heads (which have lost hardening on the ex), the exhaust studs love to pull out. The only one you can't get to with the head on is the rear most.

As far as I know the head has never been overheated and it appears very flat. Couple of short hair line cracks at the glow plugs which I'm going to ignore. No damage to the head where the blow out occurred between the bolts right out the back. About half of the manifold studs came out, I'll soak them in quality penetrating lube and replace the studs before replacing the manifold. Manifold gasket was broken in two places (inlet) and the metal piece #4 appeared to be leaking.

I've ordered the standard composite elring, 3-hole, same as the one I've just taken off. Hopefully it seals for the log run. Am buying the angle measurement device for the torque wrench.

THe last head install I did on mine was with an Elring - its what came with the Turner's kit. At the time I wasn't sure as I read MLS was the go with new heads, however, the Elring looks good and seems a quality German product. Time again was not on my side so went with the Elring, over 100K and still AOK. Alro, re the measurement device - I have a dial gauge, but its difficult to use on the back bolts - you can reference the turn easily from the points on the bolt heads - one side = 60 degrees, as long as you have a reference point for it.
