    Brake upgrade for discovery 1

I've been advised that you can upgrade the front brake calipers & rotors on my '96 Discovery 1 with calipers & rotors from either a '95 Defender 10 or '95 Range Rover Classic. I have the new calipers & rotors but can NOT locate any type of a brake swap kit with proper mounting bracket.......(i.e. the mounting holes on the larger calipers are slightly different). Has ANYONE done this upgrade.......where can I obtain the mounting brackets? The upgrade is a good one and has been done........replacing the original 41mm piston calipers with 46mm. Please advise.....my email: c.r.hogan@comcast.net. Thanks.....

You must have the wrong calipers as it is a bolt in swap, or possibly US versions are different in the braking department to Aussie vehicles.

    Part numbers

I did this upgrade a few years back. Well worth while. You end up with a slightly longer pedal (you have to move more fluid) but better braking performance (less effort) and a more-forward-biased braking system (less tail-happy). I have flogged mine, heavily laden, and they haven't even hinted at fade. I also fitted slotted discs. The calipers you need are from Defender 110/130 from '94 onwards. I got my parts from DLS in the UK and they are genuine.

    PART N?: SEB500460G - LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 R/H FRT CALIPER`94ON (VENTED OE) - AP Lockheed
    PART N?: SEB500470G - LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 L/H FRT CALIPER`94ON (VENTED OE) - AP Lockheed

Note that you need to have vented front discs to suit the above. Standard vented Disco/RRC front discs, that is, not the solid ones. And also note that these are the single-line calipers, to suit '94 onwards Discovery. Earlier ones had twin lines to the calipers.

Then it's a straight bolt-in change, but you will have to alter the brake line entering the caliper as the Disco line wraps over the caliper and comes in underneath where the Defender one is centered on the inboard face. Simple job to shorten and re-flare the pipe to suit. If you don't have the gear to do this, a new pipe can be made up by a brake/hydraulic specialist for little money if you create a sample on the car with your existing one and take it to them. Keep it tucked in towards the caliper as otherwise it'll hit the spring perch on steering lock.

Let us know hoe you go. Good luck

I just did the brakeupgrade, and it Work`s like a charm.........

Not a big deal to do the Work, just take your time, and be sure that you keep everything clean when you have removed the old disc`s and begin to reassamble the Whole thing Again.

    I ordered:

1 pc. SEB500460G or SEB500460P, (cheaper) Caliper Front RH

1 pc. SEB500470G or SEB500470P (cheaper) Caliper Front LH

    1 pc. SFP000260 (pads )

1 set disc`s slotted & drilled partnr.LR017952URBP (from rimmer bros) or Britpart DA4602 (from other supplier)

1 set STC8575P Front Brake Pad Retaining Kit (from rimmer bros)

And maybe some new bolt`s to fasten the new calipers and disc`s ....

Go buy some cheap brake pipe flaring Tool and some copper brake pipe (dont cost that much) and make a nice new brake pipe for your new calipers...

It is not that hard to use the flaring Tool, just try a few times or go on the internet to get some hints.....

Just remember to let the new brake pipe follow the new caliper so it dont hit the spring when you move the steering from side to side, because the new brakepipe comes out from the back center of the new caliper and not from the bottom of it.

And enjoy that your DISCO can brake Again without overheating the solid disc`s.......

    Centa.

PS. i am sorry, but the PC wont let me put some Pictures of the upgrade here on the site...
