    Crankcase Pressure

My 300 Tdi is starting to leak oil from the oil filler cap.I pulled the top hose from the oil separator thingy at the top of the motor.

When I put my thumb over the hole it quickly builds up pressure.

Is this normal and I just need a new seal for the fill cap, or is it game over for my engine?

It has about 370,000 km, but it runs fine.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Blowby schmo-by Dave, just fit a provent 200 and keep on keeping on. We get a few high mileage breathers but really they will keep going for ages and ages like this as long as the oil mist is directed into a catch can you at least aren't damaging compressor vanes or filling up the intercooler. There is little else than just plain worn compression rings on a rd5 that will cause this anyway.

    Thanks JC.
So how do I stop the oil leaking out from the filler cap? It is fairly bad.
It appears to be forced out under pressure.

Interesting haven't seen it that bad. Yes to seeping etc though. I guess it is possible to have a compression leak into one of the oil return galleries similar to a tdi failure point but very remote chance of that as you would most likely have excessive cooling system pressure also. How is the seal at the cap?.

    I would concur with JustinC above. My thoughts would be that you have either a head/gasket leak or severely worn / broken rings. Therefore my suggestions would be;

    1. is there pressurising of the cooling system which would indicate a head/gasket leak into the cooling galleries?
    2. run a compression test to test the rings in all cylinders - compare not just with each other but with compression for a new engine?

    Regards

it also happens if the ventilator filter plasticy thing has been blocked internally or if the dump pipe has blocked.

I've seen this once on a freshly rebiuilt engine... the dump pipe had been caught between the bellhousing and the adaptor plate.

Cooling system appears fine. Head gasket was done about 30,000 km ago with a brand new head from turners.

The cap seal is fine to look at. The cap is not overly loose either, but it is old. Can the gasket be purchased seperate or is it a case of a new cap.

The leak is bad enough that if I degrease the engine, after a 20 km drive at highway speed, there is oil all over the rocker cover with some blown over the heater hoses at the rear of the motor.

I removed the hoses one at a time off the plastic thing and there was plenty of blow by coming out both outlets.
When I put my fingers over both holes oil almost immediately came spewing up the dump pipe, so it is not blocked.

How does a worn gudgen pin cause blow by? 58 thou. That is 1.5 mm!
