Flat spot
Hi,
I have a 1997 disco s1 3.9 v8 and recently
I have noticed a flat spot when starting to rev
the motor and tonite it cut out,
I left it for around 2 hours then it started.
I think it may be the ignition coil but unsure
and dont want to spend money on this part if thats not the problem.
Are there things i can try to narrow down the problem ?

OEM ignition coils rarely fail but the ignition modules can and do fail in strange ways. Thread on Bosch ignition module replacement:

The other likely failure is the fuel pump. (1) It should be audible when you first turn on the ignition, stopping after about 1 second. (2) When you crank the engine but stop before starting the pump should be audible for around 1 second after cranking stops. If (1) but not (2) it's likely your ignition module is dead as that provides the rotation signal to the EFI system. If no fuel pump noise at all hit the fuel tank with a lump of wood, sometimes gets it going again for a little while.
The fuel pump can be replaced by a Holden VN Commodore type, you have to be careful to not damage the OEM pressure pipe inside the fuel tank. The other problem with dying fuel pumps is that they drag too much current and sometimes melt the connecting plugs. There's one on top of the fuel tank and one above the rear muffler, I've seen both fail.
