    Radio removal? D1 update

    G'day all.

I'm trying to pull the original factory radio (low-series cassette) from my '94 update Disco 1. It has a vertical slot either side of the radio presumably to take the appropriate removal tools. I have a full set (I think) of radio removal tools but I can't seem to identify which ones in which orientation will do the job. I just jammed every one that'll fit in there in turn and wiggled them around and haven't had it budge, nor will the tools lock-in.

Trawled through RAVE (including D2 and Defo in case it was in there) and none shown in there match my radio.

Can anyone post a pic of the correct tool and any tips/tricks required? Ideally a pic of the catch mechanism on the radio would be great. Point to top or bottom, swing up or down before pulling, etc? It can't be that hard.... surely?

Apart from the top of the range D1 updates, they all had a locally supplied Eurovox radio.

The keys for the flat slot are made of sheet metal & look similar to these (not the same, just found on Google images):

Usually they can be removed by grabbing the cassette slot & wiggling while pulling.

Thanks Scott. I've got a full set of pressed metal keys in a dozen or more different profiles, but without knowing what the catch looks like I can't work out which key to use in what way to pop it.

You want the bump (for want of a better word!) of the key to face inwards/toward the head unit. It will/should catch on the indentation of the unit, and then it should be able to be withdrawn.
If they (keys) are around the other way, you will just be pulling on the cradle/cage.
Don't forget to remove the little long thin black piece of trim first from under the unit.

The slots are halfway up each side of the radio and therefore there isn't an inwards direction. I understand this is the correct orientation and process for the D2 and possibly others, but mine is different.

It's the same unit as fitted to a few other local cars (VS/VT Commodore?) as attached. You can see the vertical slots either side.

When I did my 96 D1 stereo I had to remove the part of the dash around the stereo to remove the old head unit. I also had to remove the stock head unit "sleeve" (for want of a better word) and then install the sleeve of the new head unit by bending tabs in the right spot.

From memory the stock sleeve doesnt have tabs or holes in the right spot to fix a modern stereo.

It has been 6 or 7 years since I did it, so my memory may be a little fuzzy...

    Cheers

You need some keys that look like these.
Insert them in the holes in the sides of the unit, the same way as pictured.

Vertical slots - of course there is an inwards direction for the key...

The bump in(to)wards to centre of the radio

Stick 2 flat bars in, grab the cassette slot and gently pull it out...

    Worked every time I did a D1...

Well I have a set of keys as shown pictured on the battery above (thanks) and just tried it. Nada... The left key really doesn't want to go in and the right one doesn't seem to have a 'home'. "Gently" pulling it out isn't doing much either. nor is reefing on it and cursing it.

I misunderstood the inwards bump reference earlier. Makes sense now.

Has anyone got a picture of the clip that needs to be depressed/moved out of the way? Is it on the unit, or on the cradle around it? I suspect that one of my clips might be damaged not allowing insertion and release? Or perhaps I am a thicko? Seriously, this is just removing a radio... Starting to eye-off the chainsaw now....

Don't have a picture of cradle v's head unit, but what you are trying to do with the keys is separate a lightly sprung tag on the cradle, that clicks into the head unit when originally slid/placed into the cradle.
So the job of they key is separate the lightly sprung tag, from the side of the head unit. The little knobs on they keys should fall into a little depression on the head unit, and lock in. Enabling you to GENTLY (no Chainsaws) pull out the unit.
(when I say lock in, i mean, they sorta loosely fall into place)
