95 D1 V8 - rough and rich on petrol - perrrfect on LPG

    Hi all,

Spark is not the issue - LPG needs better spark and its great on LPG (and its recently had new plugs, leads, rotor button, cap, HEI ignition module, coil). Suddenly this morning started running very rich and rough on petrol - so rich it would want to conk out on acceleration and black rich smoke out the back end. So this weekend im going to clean the MAF...aside from that perhaps temp sender playing up? Although dash guage seems fine reading wise...any other thoughts? Could be leaking petrol injector I suppose, but very sudden.

    Cheers

MAF will cause over fueling. Being on LPG, did you have any backfires, as It might have damaged the MAF element

Leaking injectors will also cause it as the extra fuel is leaking in.I had 2 injectors on a D1 fail as I was always running on LPG.

    Cheers,
    Mario

The two most common issues are the temp sensor for the EFI (two pin sensor behind the thermostat housing) going open circuit and the MAF. Often it's just a dodgy connection on the MAF that's sending the ECU into limp mode. It's also worth checking the fuel pressure regulator too for internal leaks and correct operating pressures.

Thanks gents. No backfires. So I am on the right track. Beauty wouldnt the dash guage be reading incorrectly if the sender was dodgy (I know they are damped however - although less so than the D2 from what I can tell)?

I will clean the MAF (they seem to handle it better than the D2- very expensive on the D1 if it needs a new one!) and check connections.

    Cheers

Re D1 Mafs you'd be lucky to get a new Genuine one now, they are all chinese knock offs,

There are two temp senders on your engine, a two wire one for the ECU as stated and a single wire one next to it for the dash gauge. They have nothing to do with each other.

For the MAF you can check (with the ignition on) that battery voltage is present at the MAF at the brown/orange stripe wire, this wire is common to the injectors and is sometimes cut to disable the injectors for LPG running. Connections made by the LPG fitter may have come apart.

And while you're there, check that the throttle position output (plain red wire at the TPS) varies smoothly from around 0.5V to 4.5V with the throttle wide open. Ignition on of course.

Cleaned MAF and running like a bought one again. Love the relative simplicity of my d1.

    Cheers
