Thats an odd one , my immediate thought was flexplate but not if its still driveable intermittently ? Maybe converter issue.

A little under 12 months ago we lost reverse (while nose in, angle parked of course). Got home on the back of a tow truck & proceeded to check linkages, oil etc. I could get all gears normally except R. Wifey took it to MR Autos on the Monday, got out of the Disco & one of the mechanics jumped in, selected R & Bingo, no problem
We have had no problem since then until today, nearly 12 months later.
This time, luckily at home, I got it out of the shed OK, turned it off for 10 mins & then wifey got in & no R or D! 1,2, & 3 fine. Is it her???
Anyway, after doing all the checks again, I jumped in, put it in R....nothing.
Increased revs to 1500....nothing, 2000....ditto, 2500...ditto, 3000...a slight jerk & Hey Presto, all gears fine again I have just taken it for a 20 klm drive using all gears & no issues.
Trannie has 365000 up & vehicle well maintained.

p.s. transfer lever position was checked as well!

Yea mate, a real head scratcher. I just fired him up again for a 10 klm, start when cold, run with no problems.

howd you check the oil level?
that sounds a lot like low oil to me and the pump loosing its prime
this could also be because the pressure regulator is intermittantly sticking in the open position
all of those are cheap to fix with a simple oil flush and change.
what you dont want to hear is that it might be the sprags in the first gear pack getting ready to give up.

I was losing reverse too intermittently. Had a few other problems too (mainly the death rattle of the failed flex plate) when I took it into the shop a few months back, main thing was it starting out momentarily in second gear, sometimes it wouldn't lock up in 4th. They couldn't work out why it would go into reverse sometimes and sometimes not. So with these and other changing issues (after replacing the governor valve amongst other checks) the thing that finally fixed it was changing the valve block. Fixed everything in fact, who knows, sticking balls or springs somewhere, but now its all good.
Well, I sent wifey off to work today promising all was well with her Disco. If anyone notices that I haven't been on the forum in the coming week or two, please contact the relevant authorities
