    the light reflection makes the patterning hard to assess but Id go at that with a short bristle wire brush or coarse wire woll to give it a nice cross hatch for the manifold gasket to do its thing.

    Its a good plan to fill the bolt holes with studs or something suitable thats not going to get stuck in the bottom just to make the clean up easier afterwards but you can just wash them out after.

    the scratches seem to only be superficial and it looks to be handling related more than machining related.

    the last turner head I installed had sticky blue plastic on the face and ports and had a near mirror finish.

    Yea it is handling damage definitely. They aren't too bad. Just not sure how bad it can get. Just removed the front core plug too. This is just after I pulled it out, i have been cleaning the inside to fit new one. Stag sealing compound? Do i just smear on and tap it in?

    Is the pitting round p gasket ok? Araldite?

    you dont want to know how bad handling damage can get...

    When you sand back for gasket/plug surfaces you need to try and go along the seal not across it. for example for a circular seal you wouldnt work from the inside out trying to follow a radius line, you'd go in circle like a circumference. I have seen much worse pitting on the block and still had it seal up properly.

    when it comes to staging ( or hylomaring) the plug run a smear around the outside of the plug, run a smear inside the hole. let it skin just a little then tap it in. What you're looking for with hylomar is when you paint it on it will have little streaks where the brush has touched the metal, these will "heal" as the surface tension of the hylomar pulls it all back together. Once thats happend you're good to install.

    just for fun, with that welch plug, carefully cut it in half and/or knock the corrosion off of it and see how bad it is..

    Is this ok for block? Or too harsh? Been toothbrushing it for hours. Still wouldn't eat off it

    pic didnt load, what are you using as a solvent?

    if the toothbrush isnt shifting much try trimming the bristles down, you can use a soft wire brush on the block but I dont advise that on the head.


    dont use a caustic solvent.

    Sorry try again.

    There's bits of old gasket which are real hard to get off. Stanley blade out of the question? Or gasket remover?

    This was the pic, hopefully. Worked well on the corrosion on the hose adaptor for thermo housing

    Should i have kept the lash caps in order? Didn't realise and just took them off. Kept the push rods in the right order though. The lash caps i have are in really good order. Don't look like the ones that people say are made of plasticine, i think these are good, I'd like to keep them.

    No you will be adjusting the tappets so wouldnt make any difference, i re used my old ones.

    got all new studs for exhaust and inlet and also new nuts.

    the supplier i got them from sent me nylon nuts. i think they are d2 ones. i would have thought for such a hot area, nylon would just go to s..t

    should i ditch them and get metal ones?
