insane model...9m wingspan....holy crap. Ive built a lot of model RC planes...nothing like that.
I didnt bend my EGT probe, it still seems to give the right range of readings.
I actually was thinking about that and was going to do it but father in law took it upon himself to bend it for me. Told him I would try get fitting but his English is very limited and obviously didn't understand me. Must've thought i said yes bend the hell out of it and while you're at it pull the engine out and wee in the bell housing
Why the need to bend it when it works without bending?
if you dont bend it it sits in the little recess of the manifold and is not directly in the flow of the exhaust gas, it will still read correctly but its slightly slower to respond.
While its not a problem when you're driving normally, when your hanging onto the bleeding edge of the engines abilities and tolerances you really really want to know right now about the sudden 30 degree spike thats pushed the engine from giving it "yeah ok, but I dont like you for doing this" to "hell no buddy, piston crown metal meet oil pan."

I see..I thought it might have been an aesthetics thing or something. Mine seems to go up pretty rapidly when accelerating, I really doubt in that little chamber there would be a significant difference due to location.....it's a landrover not a Saturn V rocket. I saw on the net somewhere where an owner tapped a thread at an angle to the plate.
I thought it was odd it didnt go in very far, but it seems to works well. Highest its been so far is about 630C, long steep hill on a hot day with AC on. Mostly around low to mid 400's at 100km/hr.
Left this one on the backburner for a bit. havent had any time lately to finish what i started. had a go yesterday tieing loose ends. should be able to finish it tonight.
few pics from the almost finished work. the main radiator hose i bought didnt have the right shape at the offshoot that goes to the metal heater pipe on top of head. so i cut it and put on a bit of hose from the other kit i bought, which fit nicely. dont like having the extra connections/leak points but there was no way of fitting the existing hose on properly. all fits really nicely now. before there were pinch points and aluminium tpieces etc. now is mostly one piece and with brass fittings.
i will finish the wiring today for boost gauge and EGT probe. they will go behind washer bottle up into dash. took me an hour to get the washer bottle off. all the bolts bar the last one came off easily. the last one was completely seized and had to cut it off.
special thanks to everyone who contributed information. could not have done it without the help. extra special thanks to (Dave) Blknight for the amount of time he spent giving me precise information and tips.
hopefully should start her up in the next few days and see if that heating problem was a problem at all or it just gets to running temp quicker. im hoping it will be a goer though.
PS before anyone comments on the black expansion tank, it's not a factory one. it's a new heavy duty one, not opaque but improved version from the original. different type of less brittle plastic and also metal reinforced where the pipe stubs are.
and few more...
boost line coming from back of inlet manifold and engine bay
OK started her up tonight. runs beautifully. couple of little things i need to check though still. car warms up quicker than before but not by much. have the madman hooked up properly now.
was idling at about 72C at first, when i started driving got up to about 95C max when going up a hill and stabilised at about 87C on a straight road and 88-89C up hills etc. seems a bit cool but better that than too hot. the car feels proper hot under the hood. expansion tank hot, bottom hose hottish. you could feel when thermostat opened up. the madman was saying about 70C when the thermo housing was warming up but could have been just the metal housing heating up as it wasnt that hot. after the drive it was poper hot.
amazing what waste gate signal from inlet manifold, turner head, new injectors does. feels so much smoother and more powerful.
now for the cons...
when i first started sounded perfect. everything running smooth etc. but as i started driving it and it got to the right operating temp it started to make a sound. seems to be near the front around the belts. possbily bearing or something. got louder and louder the more i drove, decided to bring her back home and when i drove in garage you could hear it fairly loud. doesnt sound healthy.
happy with the other works but very disappointed that this had to come up. theres always something. i took video of it. will try and post here see if it works. was with iphone and about 20mb so not sure if it will work.
also when i filled up the coolant i got it to equilibrium level and then put another bottle in the expansion tank. nothing more went into the system. some was leaking from around the hole of the tank. had my wife hold it down. but nothing more went it. the expansion tank if full to the top. when i stared it first time the low coolant alarm was quiet. but after i ran it a bit to try let the coolant to purge air out and switched it off, the next time i turned it on the low coolant buzzed for a bit and then went on and off quickly for about 15 seconds before it stopped. have always had a bit of trouble with the filling of this thing. followed blknight's instructions to the t.
any feedback would be very apreciated. meanwhile i will try and put this video up.
