Sourcing an auto for a TDI
Howdy all
My TDI's auto has finally died, have been quoted around $4k to rebuild.
Have checked eBay and there are very few auto's and they tend to not mention how many k's the box has done.
This leads me to ask, has anyone sourced a reco box from the UK?
And if so was it worth it or am I better to just break up the D1 for parts.
Thanks
Don

What's wrong with it - could be repairable.

Unfortunately it appears the clutch packs have gone, so a rebuild is the best option

Buying from the UK is not an option. Core+shipping will kill you, even more with the current (and future) exchange rate. In any case, I see auto gearboxes with <200k mileage for $500 fairly commonly on gumtree or ebay.
They're so common, and new parts are cheap enough that it's not worth parting them out.

If you do decide to go for a rebuild give Manuel Transmissions in Thomastown a call as they do a mod to the ZF4HP22 to get it to lock-up in third which makes a big difference in temperatures while towing and off roading, extends the life of the box.

I have a spares auto tdi that was taken off the road due to rust in the firewall.
198ks drove perfectly right up until I parked it.
Let me know if you are still looking.
It's still drivable now, just has no windscreen or interior. Engine will be taken out in Jan.
Cheers

Hi Sean
Are you willing to sell the auto seperately and freight it to Melbourne? I of course would pay all charges.
Thanks
Don
