    tools for 300tdi timing belt

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm in Ringwood nth, Melbourne, need to do the timing belt and seals on a 95 300tdi auto, bought the car with a rebuilt engine and a pretty good oil leak has developed from the threaded hole at the bottom of the timing cover, would anyone have the special tools available for sale or rent?

Specifically looking for the special tool to lock crank when tightening crank nut, don't mind a home made version if it works, timing tools would be handy too but not essential.

Also, are special tools needed to seat o-rings and seals?

Cheers all, any help much appreciated

    Andy

You don't actually need any 'special' tools. A drill bit of a suitable diameter (3/8" I think) will hold the injection pump pulley and the crank timing pin can be created by drilling a 5mm hole in the centre of the relevant plug (front face of the flywheel housing plate on the rear of the engine). If you tap a 6mm thread in the middle of the plug, you can use a 40mm long threaded 6mm bolt as a timing pin with the first 5mm of thread removed to 5mm diameter, gently engage this pin for timing and fit a short 6mm bolt to plug the hole afterwards.

The best way to hold the crank for pulley nut removal/refitting is to remove the starter motor, insert a suitable 3/8 drive deep socket through the notch visible and engage a torque converter bolt head.

use the torque converter access and foul one of the torque converter bolts to lock the crank while you do up the crank nut.

I usually use a socket taped to fit the hole when I do it this way.

Is it ok to lock the crank (for the purpose of final crank bolt torquing) via the notch in the flywheel e.g., locking with the crank timing pin? I've always used a tool I made myself that fits to the pulley and locks against the chassis but was curious & this would be much easier.

Thanks Rangieman, I'm probably going to do it after Christmas now, busy at work and weekends are too short! Away to the coast boxing day, was going to take the disco but looks like we'll be in the wife's mazda how boring... still, gives me a job when I get back
