    Vacuum pump symptoms

Hi all, my 300tdi has developed a rattle and I suspect it is the vacuum pump. I have checked the tappets - all good.
On start up (at idle), there is usually no vacuum until I give the motor a rev, then it is only good for 1 sometimes two quick pumps of the pedal before running out of vacuum and there is rattle that sounds like a tappet or diesel knock which is present about 90-95% of the time. These is also some oil leaking from the vicinity of the vacuum pump.

Is this a typical type of behaviour for a failing vacuum pump?.

    Thanks,
    Tom.

Once they are leaking oil they usually leak vacuum as well, search the forum for the repair guide.

Yep, spot on. Mine made that tapping noise and the brake pedal went really hard. Had to stand on the brakes to stop. While you're poking around in there, check your brake booster for cracks around the mounting bolts. Replace it if it's cracked.

Tom , make sure the booster hasn't got oil in it or the hose when you replace it.Suppliers won't warrant a new one if there is oil in the system. Some even request the vacuum booster also be replaced.
    Cheers, Mario

I believe you have a lightly used pump you could sell Tom .

Booster is about a year old (and I still have the old one which is likely serviceable). So I doubt it has oil in it. Whole brake system replaced - Master Cylinder, Caliper Pistons and seals, brake hoses and proportioning valve. But I will check. I already intend to take the pipe off and check it for wear etc.

    Cheers,
    Tom.
