Different heads with different bolt holes.
Tom.
Are these heads toast?
The Disco pulled up in a cloud of steam from the exhaust, last week in town.
Found a park and went shopping.
On return found it locked up as I suspected a blown gasket anyway.
Had not been showing signs of overheating on the way in.
RACQ home. Head off on the weekend. What a bugger of a job, as the manifold studs are too long to just pull the manifold back and the turbo drain short that all has to come off.
Coolant got into no 1 pot though the gasket was not blown.
Anyway whats the verdict on that head and another I pulled off a spare motor?
Keith

Don't even think about relying on an internet diagnosis (wrong head haha, the lower picture has been cropped) take the heads straight to a specialist who will hardness check the surface and see if they are worth anything.
I will take one into town tomorrow and see what the verdict is.
We have two engine rebuilders in town and the are right next to each other
I thought I might give one head to one and the other to next door but a bit reluctant to let each know what I am doing
based only on the pictures I wouldnt trust either of those heads due to the pitting between 2+3 for the head on the top and what appears to be the pitting where the combustion fronts been eroding near the exhaust valves on #1
the lower head appears to have been walking its fire rings by the fretting where the ring seal marks are.
depending on where you are in QLD I would take them both to MR automotive and get them to do the basic checks on the heads for you

Thanks Dave.
The leak was between the coolant port and inlet valve in the bottom left.
That part of the head looks strange as there is a circular cut around the edge of the combustion chamber as if its an insert. but it is not all the way around so cant be.
Thats the lower head in the first picture. The other spare looked better I thought.
That looks like a pre-ignition type burn, the combustion gasses seem to be melting part of the head, similar to petrol engine burning a hole in a piston the original pic of the 2 heads shows multiple marks.
I have seen injector nozzle pattern marks before, usually in the combustion on top of the piston.
I would find an Expert diesel mechanic/shop and get them to interpret what those marks are caused by.
BTW have those 2 heads ever been on your engine, as the burn pattern is almost identical, what sort of Fuel are you using, Regards Frank.

Hi,
I have had similar looking suspect heads a few times (300Tdi rather than 200Tdi) I just pull the valves out and take them down to the local head place, and request inspection, hardness test and skim as required.
In all cases (~10) bar one, the result has been instant, to effect that the scrappy can convert them to beer coupons. On the exception, the chap gave it a stern diode of looking at, pronounced it fit for service with no work required.
They have never charged me, and they are worth about a schooner at the scrappy if stripped....
Cheers, Gumnut
The bottom head is off my engine, the top was a spare and is the one I took in.
I am picking it up tomorrow. It passed his hardness test and he gave it a light skim and reset the valve seats ground the valves.
We will see how it goes.
Oh, the fuel. Just plain pump diesel, nothing else.
Here is a pick of the block.
On another matter the hose from aircleaner to turbo is cactus.
With out going genuine has anyone found any options out there?
