Hey all, had some fun today with a stuck handbrake. Luckily I was in my driveway.
Pulled it apart (see link for pics). Had a few questions if anyone can answer 1-is there a tolerance spec for the shoes? Mine appear to be about 7.5mm 2-should the hand brake cable spring look like mine. I feel the shoes need replacing as does the cable. The shoes are covered in gunk, there's a bit of grease/oil sand mixed in there which also seems to be sticking to the drum. I plan on replacing most anyway. Just thought it was strange I couldn't find any specs in the ws-manual. Also note if anyone else is overhauling theirs, you can see one of the pins for the shoe is totally rusted. cheers jimmy https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B...FjQkdrTjQ/edit

while I'm waiting for the pics to load.
the minimum spec for the shoes is the same as for normal drum brake shoes 1mm over the rivets or the bonding, that said I'm yet to see a set that didnt need to be replaced before they got that badly worn, most of them get oil contamination or shredding from contamination within the drum assembly.
the shoes have had oil contamination on them as you've spotted. if the build up of contamination gets into the actuating mechanism they can stick on its prudent to replace the cable while you have it like it is as its somewhat more entertaining when you're under the vehicle trying to do it.
you might also find that the cable is sticking, if it is you need to check all your earth connections on the engine and body work as this indicates that your handbrake cable is doubling up as the primary earth from the engine to the battery.
