If it were me, I would just go over all the connections...make sure they are all tight. Have you checked the pump timing?

Not yet. Will do that tomorrow. Went through fuel lines today. Definitely runs a bit smoother now but still ticking and revs sound high at 3k

That's the one Dave was referring to.

Also follow that pipe back to the pump, there is a banjo bolt there which has a strainer inside, have a look for any nasties in there.

Sedimenter is good, lines are free from blockages. Once you have done the aeration check, the lift pump is next on the hit list.

ok. back online. been busy last few weeks with birth of my first child. girl. Josephine Anna.

took off the return line and re routed it to clear tube into clear bottle. seems to be no air in it apart from very few little buble at the end when i switched her off coming up from bottom of bottle.

was running really rough the last few days with very loud ticking and that thump sound.

yesterday i tightened all the fuel lines and checked valve clearances again. the two bolts which hold rocker assembly (not the ones which also hold the cover but the other two) were very loose. one almost had unthreaded itself completely. the other was just loose. tightened them up and re set all the clearance. behold, the loud ticking is gone. also, the thump sound is much quieter. two of the clearances had to be adjusted very slightly.

i'll keep an eye on the bolts to see if they loosen again. might have been oversight from my side but i seem to remember tightening all that stuff to correct torque settings.

took her for test drive last night and drives better than it has in a very long time. was really nice to drive. still screams its ts off when over 3k. but got it to 4k just. maybe its just me and im very gentle on motors.

in true LR style though, got home from the drive very happy and the rear window busted as i was closing her up. heard a crack and the glass went loose. had to duct tape it up. motor works fine. but doesnt engage up or down. seems like i need new regulator.

could be far worse problems though. very happy with how she drives. will finally play with fuel pump tuning soon now.

    Congrats on the little one.

Glad things are getting better. But it sounds as if it is still starving a bit. Id still check the lift pump, and go over the timing again.

to be honest i think the timing is good. there;s no way it would run that well if it was out even by a bit. i tried to check the pushrods for damage. hard to tell. they look pretty straight to me.

i will however check the lift pump.

thing is it doesnt run out of steam and just not rev over 3k. it certainly does but screams its ts off when you get that high. which is why i thought the tacho was out. its not like it just dies out and cant get there. it just sounds very loud as if its doing 6k rpm instead of 4. not sure how these guys supposed to sound as ive only ever driven mine.

guess no harm in looking though.

other thing actually when i was setting clearances. when the arm was down say on a set valve which i was about to check, the rocker arm had a little bit of freeplay. on all of them. you could rock the arm slightly which obviously changed the spacing to the lash caps. i rocked them to the most closed position when measuring. should there be a bit of free play or should they be stiff?

Thats right, there should be a little freeplay on the closed valves.

Seeing as the tappets improved it heaps id be also thinking about air restrictions

Getting to the bottom of the ticking/thumping is still more important than the tacho reading.
Yes they do scream a little at high rpm.

yea well after tappets adjustment and tightenting of those two rocker gear bolts and tightening of all fuel lines the ticking is you could say non existent. the thump is much lower too. was noticeable before. now it's almost gone. enough that even my ocd nature can deal with it.

i think most the problems lay under the rocker cover to be honest.

air restrictions as in going into the turbo? or after? i thought collapsing hoses but they seem good too.

to be honest i think im quite happy with it. it does scream but as you say they do that. i dont often go over 3k anyway. certainly not over 4k.

air cleaner is pretty new. i cheked that few weeks ago and is still very clean. thought maybe was some of the plumbing i put in from manifold to pressure gauge and re routing waste gate signal. but checked it all yesterday n seems all pretty well put together.

managed to fix aircon again too. it needed jumper on that plug that normally plugs into the ubend (thermo housing). i plugged it in and stopped working. possibly the sender unit not working and telling the car that its too hot and switching aircon off. i unplugged it but leftjumper out and still not working. so you need to actually have jumper in the plug to complete the cct.

Collapsing pipes can happen both pre and post turbo the 90deg bend is main culprit. The pipes can also get a blister form inside which restricts airflow, post turbo for that one.

If the tick is all but gone then, without hearing it, id almost call it the normal tappety sound of a 300tdi. The thump sounds concerning..... i cant pick it in your video - crappy audio at my end.

If you are happy with it then perhaps leave it be.

Sorry, cant help with the air con issues.
