Failing to reach 3000rpm

Air con is no issue. As mentioned it is fixed.

The thump sound only worries me when someone tells me it's concerning. The lr specialist recons its all normal but then again they seem to just dismiss everything on the old thing. It's definitely more quiet but still there.

Would be nice to know what it actually is. Sounds more like front of engine but could just be sound bouncing around. May be vacuum pump and im just not hearing it. Pretty sure i did the stethoscrewdriver trick though n it was good.

All hoses are new so don't think blistering. The elbow is quite stiff. The inlet is factory n in good nick.

In general a thumping sound is cause for concern, but then without hearing it it is hard to tell.

Is there another mech in your area for a second opinion?

Does it sound anything like when you pull the inlet pipes off and run it without?

Or of course, if you are happy leave it be.

which inlet pipes are we talking about. it's just a bit more quiet than before but still there. it goes in sync with engine its just a thump thump thump sorta sound. you can hear it most near the water pump area. all pullies are tight, belt is good. the tensioner needs replacing as it chirps and changing the bearing didnt help.

i wonder if it could be the PS pump. you can hear the sound slightly from cab though. i do listen to everything though. im very paranoid with sounds.

new sound appeared this morning when i parked at work. like an extra idle type sound or a gear spinning sound. hard to say. clutch in or out didnt make a difference to it.

just want to be able to drive and feel relaxed. instead of constantly listening out or feeling for things. maybe meds would be more helpful.

sorry just to clear things up though. that thump sound was there before i did the head works. has been there for a while. i always thought that it may be big ends. i was going to do them whilst i had the head off, but time and skills didnt permit. it's my only car now so cannot afford to have it off road for too long. the head works already took 8 weeks longer than i thought.

the LR mechanic said it didnt sound like big end sound. he said possibly the nut on crank pulley loose but when they looked at it the mechanic said it was nice and tight and said there was no sound which was abnormal.

to me it's not a sound which is normal, even though never caused problems.

If you remove the pipe from the intercooler to the manifold and idle it you get a thumping noise, anything like that?

Personally If i find one mistake in a job that i have just done i go back through the entire job to see where else i have made a mistake.

Hmmm paranoid about sounds....... maybe a 19 - 20something year old landrover may not be a good choice :p

no i was thinking that as well. when i get home i will give that a try.

and i am not willing to pull head off again and go through all that again. made a few errors but i think the head part was fine. most the mistakes were on the outside. i hope.


ill try pulling intercooler pipe off like you say. if it was a sound like that what would that indicate? that it's just the sound coming our of the hose soemwhere and not to worry? or is it sinister?

did more investigating on weekend. took both belts off and sound still there. took off inlet pipe to manifold and sound still the same.

did the screwdriver stethoscope trick all over the place and everything sounded normal until i put it to the front of the head. then i could hear the thump. well its not so much a thump. sorta in between a tap and thump. checked rest of head and quiet. then went back to front and it was quiet. moved screwdriver a bit and could hear it again. i looked down and the shaft of the screwdriver was touching the injector lines going to the front to injectors. so i put the screw driver on the IP and can hear tap from there when you positiong it right.

only thing is. from inside the car the tap sound different. when i press the clutch down you can hear it much louder and it increases at the same speed as engine revs. wondering if flywheel or clutch of sommit is touching somewhere or spinning out of balance?

may be two different sounds. seems to get a bit worse when car is warm. but as you drive it its a bit louder too, like at the start of each gear before the engine noise takes over too much. sounds like someone is tapping with a hammer but in a spinning motion if that makes sense.

i got under car and put screwdriver on sump and its sounds all normal in there. so dont think it would be big end. the LR guy said he didnt think was big end either. the thing is. it used to be loud near water pump and now its not. now its louder when you go to IP side and look at the engine side on near the IP. soon as you turn your head the sound goes away. so strange. it drives me crazy though. dont want to be doing damage. any change piston is hitting injector or glow plug? i assume if that was the case that the thump would be slower though and not exactly the same as engine revs.

ok, read another post from someone who went through a huge amount of effort to find cause of his knocking. ended up being timing belt slipped teeth. so was one tooth retarded and IP was 1.5 advanced. he did no mention how it was running though. did say blows smoke at start up but he had some other major issues.

as the knock seems to sound like its coming from IP from the screwdriver trick, i know we have discussed this before but is it possible for the car to still be running fairly smoothly but have the timing out one tooth? the reason i have not checked timing yet is because i would have thought it would run much rougher if it was out. if any of you think that it could actually run almost perfect even when just out then i will check this next. it does not blow any smoke and idels very smoothly, apart from the knock knock knock.

timing belt was done less than 5k ago using updated gear/pulleys. but possible may have stuffed timing up during my head works.

its really getting me down. after all the work ive done and still to have this. if it carries on with too much work my wife will make me part ways with it which i dont want to do.
