Failing to reach 3000rpm

Hi, thanks for your detailed reply.

To be honest i can't remember. I'm sure it wasn't this bad but then again I'm much more sensitive to it now that ive invested so much time and money.
It's my first disco and ive owned it for roughly four years. I'm sure it used to be smoother. I know they are no race vehicle but I would have expected a new gas flowed head, new injectors etc. to have at least given it a bit more oomph. Possibly was a bit quicker when I first did the work. But maybe was that I hadn't driven it in a while.

Timing belt may be out but id say more from something i did and not the installation. The shop that did it specialises in Landrover. I'd take the blame before then.

Fuel lift pump bout three years old. Could be faulty again though. As was mentioned by the other chaps it could be this. It will be my next step.

Fuel filter just been done.

All my pipes, cooling and turbo are all new. The boost gauge shows good pressure.

Intercooler was out when I changed turbo hoses and cleaned.

Valve clearances were done as part of the new head works and again two weeks ago as they got noisy and when i looked two of the bolts holding down rocker shaft came loose. I rechecked them yesterday to make sure they didn't come loose again.

I press the overtake button in summer when i have ac on but dont use ac much anyway.

The IP was reconditioned when they did the timing belt. Probably put in with factory fuelling. Was thinking maybe with new injectors and gas flowed head i may need to adjust fuel to make it run better. But maybe not. Was going to tweak it but can't crack the four screws. Need an impact bit. Once i find what that knocking noise is ill play with pump.

Did a trip up to lancelin today. Good 200+ km round trip, with some off-road at dunes. Ran quite well. I no longer have to back off on highway hills to stop temp gauge from rising. Stayed at 88-89C all along. Was very happy. Barely used 1/8 tank fuel. Great little car/beast.

Lift pumps are a known to fail - in response you your earlier question, just loosen the fuel filter bleed screw and give it a pump. At certain engine rest positions it will not work, try rotating the engine by the pulley bolt to a few different positions and if nothing then it is dead.. ive never tried the screwdriver trick on a lift pump but id expect it to be noisy if it is working.
Id still check the timing, but push it to the bottom of the to do list (no blame game, just to be sure)
A reconditioned pump should come back at factory settings (mine did) which is pretty gutless but does not explain knocking.

Having worked through similar issues I know the frustration.

I too have been having a similar problem with the ticking etc. My problem is a little problematic as it is present about 60% of the time. I have replaced the lift pump, fuel lines and, just two days ago, the timing belt and tensioner etc. The tappets are fine. I have also dismantled the sedimenter and cleaned it, also replacing the seals. I have also replaced the hose and washers on the fuel return line and the other copper washers on the injector pump (as well as ensuring there is free flow through the various banjo bolts). I will be pulling out the fuel sender unit to inspect that, as this is where I now suspect the problem is. I will let you know the result in a day or two.

yea definately factory settings id say. but maybe its knocking because not enough fuel getting to it or i jumped a tooth on timing due to my negligence. ill do the lift pump next as you say. sounds like an easy test.

Odd that the tappet lock nut came loose. I've had tappets on a 300tdi come out of adjustment in the past but it was due to a worn camshaft, as in the hard facing was gone.

Dont use a impact anything on the injector pump, its going to be costly if/when you break part of the housing off. Yes the straight slot screws are tight, but use a good quality and fitting screw driver, use a square shaft and a spanner on it if you have too.

The adjustment... well I'm sure if you search it will be well covered here on AULRO.... someone might even post a link for you.

So it sounds like its all running fine then??? .... if u really have doubts, then arrange to call in if you are in Perth and I can take it for a drive, will soon tell you if its a gutless turd or not.

How has it jumped a tooth through your neglect? ... is it in regards to your comment about turning engine back the other way??.... rubbish.. forget that theory. its either been done corectly or it hasnt. Apart from me (haha) the only other Land Rover specialist I recommend is Rovertech.

I'm sure others can let you know, a cheap lift pump prolly wont last long, just go by what brand others have got for their 300tdi.

knocking as in pinking?? .... again sounds far fetched to me, if you can hear pre-ignition on a 300tdi dont, your better than me. the factory setting is under fueling but only shows in lack of performance.

The injector pump rebuild/refurb wont necessarily come back at factory settings, depending on the place that did it, if they know the pump and know its a 300tdi, they will likely tweak it. Many years ago with Cummins, the setup for that injector pump was quite different, I started setting them on Land Rovers the same and it made a world of difference.

yea ive done fair bit of research on the pump fuelling adjustment. fairly confident with it. just getting the screws off thats the challenge.

it wasnt the lock nut on tappets that came loose, it was two of the bolts which actually hold the rocker shaft down. so once i undid them and the rest and re tightened them, i reset all the valve clearance again.

it kinda is running fine. still not as id like. im sure it ran better. and the knock is what concerns me most.

i might call you in the next day or two and arrange something.

well it was rovertech which did the timing and put in the recon IP from one of their diesel specialists. which is why i would blame myself rather than them for any mistiming issue. if that is the case. timing may be perfect. was just one theory on where the knock may be coming from and why it was running funny.

reason why i think pump set factory is that certain places have warranty on parts so they make sure they set it right so that it doesnt come back on them if anything happens. also when im in full flight on a hill as i was yesterday my EGT only get to bout 580 at max. so am assuming there is still some way to go. plus from what ive read and seen from pump tweaks, mine is definately one of the slow ones still.

ok. after having my car driven by a tdi expert (DazzaTD5) he seems to think mine is on the smoother/cleaner end of the scale and need not worry so much about it. which is kinda a relief. the pump will still be tweaked a bit but generally he thinks it pulls away quite for for a 300tdi.

so can rest a little easier and can spend my time actually using it what it is designed to do and also fixing the interior from rattles and vibrations etc. grr
