Friends, showing my son how to use the centre diff lock on our '97 300tdi auto, and now I can't get it to disengage. I can select H and L with diff lock engaged, but the selector lever won't move across to the normal (disengaged) position. Tried all the usual rocking back and forth, took it for a run up to the back gate (1/2 K steep dirt track), still can't move the lever across to the right side of the H-pattern. And of course the diff-lock indicator light stays on. Any ideas?

And it wont disengage untill you can get the lever over to the right , possibly not used much so may need some lubricant on the linkages.

tried getting under it and using level pry the selector loose? possibly the connecting pins between selector lever is worn and has some freeplay?
from memory theres a clamp around the selecting pin which has a teeth on it. when you move stick up and down it turns the pin and when you move left and right on stick it slides the pin in and out. if you look at pics online you can see what i mean. it could just be your gearstick or the lever is slack and doesnt have the leverage. ill look up post on my lt230. should have close up pic of it. may need to remove the centre tunnel assembly so that you can take cover off the selector mechanism. i ended up cleaning mine out. was a bit fiddly but now is smooth as.
start simple though and just get under and see if you can see the selector and pry is left or right. obviously make sure its in neutral inside the car first.

sorry didnt see the auto part though. mine is a manual. you can see close up pic of the mechanism i was referring to, which is on the gearbox but is for selecting tcase. i assume the auto is different then.
Ah , Am I reading correctly that the poster is stuck in difflock.
It often helps to jack up a front wheel then try to disengage.
The difflock lever is at the front of the front nose at top left. It may also help if you can get someone with multigrips to try and turn the lever anticlockwise.
If the problem is the Hi /lo then the grubscrew may have come loose inside the selector box and this will warrant taking out the floor as this will be the only way to reach it.

Gentlemens, many thanks for all the sensible advice, the problem is now solved. With the lovely SWMBO in the driver's seat I asked her to try to move the shift lever to the disengaged side while I slid under the vehicle with a nice big screwdriver. We soon worked out what had to move where and with the aid of the screwdriver the centre diff lock disengaged easily. It's wonderful to get helpful advice from fellow Landie sufferers.........
