Newby from Syd - Looking at Disco 1

    Hi all,
Am currently looking at a neglected Disco 1 that needs a bit of work. Waiting to see how much the guy wants for it, but has been out of rego since Nov 2013.

It is a 95 Turbo Diesel Auto .. Body is fair, interior is pretty good, and despite sitting out in the elements, no musky smell or anything inside.

It is an auto, and I am told when the owner was driving it (when rego'd) the car was in gear, and when he went to take of ... Nothing... Just revved...

So not sure if it is going to mean get a new box/reco, or if it will be something like the teeth have been ground away from where it matches the input shaft.. (if that is how it works) ...

Main reason to get the car is to get the Mrs use to driving it, and then after I have her on board maybe upgrade in a few years time to something newer, and when she is sick of her 2014 Suzuki Swift.

Not sure if this is the right Disco for me, but I know the engine on this thing has been well maintained, and only reason the car has sat there is the guy has 6 or 7 other cars, and couldn't be bothered with it. So it just sits on his lawn...

All up am hoping for a good reliable and cheap way to get a Disco, so will see how it goes.

I am pretty familiar with modding cars, but usually sports cars, and manuals. So this will be a first for me, and will be interesting to try my hand at some minor off-roading as well ...

    Overall looking forward to it..

Sounds like it could be a bit problematic especially if there's an auto gearbox issue. There's plenty of D1s for sale around and don't cost much now even for a good one. Service records is a must, and check the cooling system thoroughly.

I've had my D1 V8 auto for almost 20 years now and love driving it. Just had the roof and bonnet repainted.

you can also pick up some d2 now fairly cheap. to be honest i wouldnt go near it. as traco said you can find better ones around. depends on your budget really but to fix auto box may end up costing you more than getting a full working registered one anyway.

    Thanks guys...

Am looking at only spending about 3k .. And looking to do most of the work on it myself ...

So have been sourcing boxes, and have found one locally for $1,500 Exchange.. And another in QLD for about $750 delivered.. Figure 1K box, + 1k to rego, and maybe $500 for the car keeps me under the budget.

Have tried to look for something to drive straight away in that price range, but not really seen anything. But yeah, guess I haven't really exhausted all options as yet.

Disco1's on Car Sales where still going for a fair bit more.. From what I have seen ... But am not going to rush into it...

I do want to drop the box and see what's up ... And condition that into the sale if I take it..

A friend knows the guy, and the engine has apparently been well looked after, and all that jazz.. So not sure ... Maybe even if I get it as a parts mule ... And look around..

I do want the diesel though .. Don't want the huge bill of the v8 ...

I'd steer clear of that one unless it was just about given away, there have been plenty of cheap D1's for sale down here within your budget so just keep looking at dont jump at the first pos that comes up.
A reco auto is 3K plus so be wary of 2nd hand boxes for less than 1K.

It might be fine, just minor issues or it might be a nightmare. Lock the centre diff and see if it drives. If you are happy to do the work and dont mind shocks then go for it.

The free revving maybe because it is not in hi/low correctly. Do some checks, particularly with the high/low/diff lock. At 200 clams, I would grab it if not just for parts for the next one.

Looks like he is playing hardball.. And now wanting offers of 1k..

At that price, I don't want to risk it..

Have seen an 02 going for 1k so may look at that instead.. Meets requirements of diesel and auto.. Just needs rego..

02 will be a D2 td5 and would have to be a bucket of bolts for 1k, dont waste your time - it will be a money pit.
A d1 in good nic is hard enough to find in your budget.
