A tough one; using oil but in a weird way
Hello all,
This is a weird one, I have a 4.6 bottom end and a 3.9 hotwire top end.
The weird bit starts now,
On cold start up, and only occasionally, once a week to once every 3 weeks. you start the car as usual, start to drive off, go through some gears, and then the weird stuff happens.
the engine looses power, to a point I'm thinking its going to stop, but it doesn't. Then I notice a fair amount of oil smoke coming from the rear, so I a guessing something is sucking oil from somewhere, it then clears itself and runs perfectly. and yes, I check the oil and its using some.
Its driving me nuts,
I assume its valve stem seals? Or a blocked PVC valve
Any help would be great
Cheers NAT

Sounds like an intermittent oversupply of fuel to me. Is the MAF okay?

OK this is an outside chance.
What if your mesh in the crankcase ventilation is letting oil through, and some of it is making its way into the plenum via the small hole in the T piece on the crankcase ventilation line, or maybe being sucked into the throttle body and then into the plenum.
It would pool around the trumpets but maybe some would be sucked in after start up.
I cannot see valve guides doing it.

Does your top end system have an IAC valve on the back of the plenum, which is also attached to the fuel pressure regulator valve.
If so, this could be your problem, first check the vacuum lines are not split or leaking or any fuel in them, check the 3 allen bolts to make sure they are tight, if working properly, what PhillipA said, Regards Frank.

Can't be fuel related,
It does it on gas too
I'll check vents etc
Yep it's a weird one
