Electric Windows

Hey folks,

I think i have gremlins in my electric window system of my 94 post facelift disco!
All of the windows, front back and both sides, work intermittently with no apparent pattern for when they work or don't. It makes no difference if i use the switches on the doors in the back or the switches in the front, the windows just stop working sometimes.

There is another small thread on here about some other electric window problems, but they seemed to be working or not working or windows that were not going all the way up - whereas mine are all totally intermittent.

One day the windows will all work perfectly, the next day they wont, or some will work some wont. The two front windows worked perfectly for a long time whilst the backs were originally faulty, but now the fronts are faulty too!

Any thoughts, on common places/causes to look before i have to trace the whole system? Apparently there is a control module located somewhere? Could it work intermittently, or would it just be working or not working all the time?
Thanks

Hi mate. Odds are it will be the control module which is located under the glove box. Dry or cracked solder joints are the usual causes.

Rightio,
There is a tray under the glove box full of relays etc that i remember checking for the relay that controls the condenser fans, is it above or below that tray?
Will check it out when i get home.
One of the main reasons to get it fixed, is for water crossings - not being able to open the windows if needed is not a good thing!

Window ECU is just above the alarm unit, as above it will be the joints cracked. A little flux and a soldering iron will fix it in a few mins.

check the solder joints first as mentioned but could also be the switches themselves. i had one window which worked on and off when it felt like it. i swapped switches around and worked every time. so just bought new switch for that window and no problem since.

All fixed!
I pulled out the window ECU and found the pin that is commonly at fault to have a cracked solder joint. Soldered it up and the rear windows work fine.

I found a bit of a tutorial here:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...ery-1-ecu.html

Which also has a link to a video which helps a lot with pulling out the ECU:

The standard instructions involve just pulling the end off the plastic ecu housing and wiggling the PCB out without any room from behind the glove box. My two cents worth if anyone is about to do this repair is if you also undo the two bolts at the front that hold the black plastic box (there will still be one bolt at the back that is too hard to get too), you can then swivel the housing down and pull the circuit board out under the glove box where there is much more room.

Now onto fix the central locking, some doors intermittently don't lock! Presumably slack built up over time in the little control rods. The worst part is all the black goo that holds those plastic sheets onto the door. I love Landrovers...

Also, you can clean the crap out of the window switches by giving them a blast with an aerosol can of electrical contact cleaner. You need to do this from the back of the switches using the little tube that comes with the can.
