    Intermittent noise 300tdi

Hi, since replacing the head a few months ago I have been chasing down an intermittent noise - sounds like a noisy tappet. To date I have checked the tappets 3 times. All good there. I have replaced the vacuum and lift pumps. I have replaced the timing belt and tensioners. There is no pattern to the noise. It is happening about 50-60% of the time. It is sometimes there at cold start time and sometimes not. It can happen as it is gouing. I.e. Start and it is not there, then it can appear as the motor heats up and vice versa.

Motor is not missing and has plenty of power and it does not smoke or use water or oil. There are now no fuel/air leaks - all new fuel line and return line hose and washers. Could this be a collapsed follower?

    Thanks in advance,
    Tom.

Motor has 260k. Can big end bearings be intermittent?

Worn lash caps might cause those symptoms.

The followers/lifters are solid, so unlikely.

Another weird noise is the mud sheild fitted to some harmonic balancers comes loose and rattles around.

I had a ticking tappet like sound on my 300tdi which ended up being the exhaust manifold was blown on one cyl. replaced it in 20 min and was all fixed. worth checking for a cheap easy to change part.

Yeah because they are hard to pick over the sound of a tdi.

I have thought about this. May bear investigating when I have a spare gasket.

    Thanks,
    Tom.

if you go down that path and find that your gasket needs changing i would follow down the path of cutting the gasket up. Blknight told me this trick. i cut mine into 4 pieces i believe. one inlet and one outlet for each piece.

it reduces the chance of leaks or the usual cracked gasket problem further down the track.

In the meantime, just check the manifold nuts. No 4 working loose is quite common
