    Question Buying a 1995 Discovery V8i (Gas)

    Hi,

My son is looking to buy a Discovery and has his sights on a 1995 V8i with gas.

    Price is $2500.

I am a complete novice in this area. Can someone please provide some general info about what to look for in a good example of this car, price range, likely mechanical faults - or any other info you think it is important to know.

He's not flush with cash but really likes the Discovery model.

    Thanks,

    The Novice.

1995 is a pretty old vehicle, and on gas if the system is over 10years old then it will need to have the tank retested, factor in the cost to remove and test and reinstall. Check the fire wall for rusting, check under the carpet on both the floor pans for rust/holes.
Check the head gaskets for leaks, the swivels for play.
rust at alpine windows, a notorious place to rust out.
A 20 year old car will have wear and tear, many things to check.
Best get someone who is familiar to check it out for you.
How many kms has it done?
$2500 expect to spend quite a few dollars to get it road worthy to register.

    Thanks

    Thanks Roverlord.

    I'll pass the info on.

I thought $2.5K might be a bit too good to be true.

    Thanks,

The single most critical fault with an elderly 3.9 V8 Disco is their propensity to leak coolant internally from a cracked block after a major overheat. The coolant reservoir should be full when cold to the correct mark inside with clean green coolant. The test drive before coughing up the dosh should include a vigorous drive up a big hill or 20 mins on a highway with a head wind. If it passes that stress test with flying colours everything else is fixable, just needs patience and ready cash.

If it has bee looked after then its possible its a good vehicle, just depends on what kind of life its had.
If it looks fairly clean then the owner may have looked after it, of course looks can be deceiving so heed above advice.

Not sure if this helps, but I recently bought a 96 Disco 1, petrol/gas.
290k on it, body in good shape (no rust) but sun damage on top.
Interior pretty worn, and have so far had to replace a door handle and a few bulbs, and rear power windows will require some love.

Drives well and no leaks (coolant or otherwise).

I paid $1700 (private sale in Tassie).

    Smile Thanks for the responses.

    Thanks Folks,

Probably worth a look from the sound of things.

I'll let you know how it goes if he follows it up.

    Regards,

    Novice.

Any 21 year old V8 Disco is not going to be in demand.

It's a buyers market...........so buy the best for the least - offer real low
