Keeping your 300tdi Disco cool

If there was one thing you could do what would it be to help you cooling system keep at safe levels? My D1 runs at good temps until I whack on the a/c...

What can I do?

Thorough system flush.
New or rodded radiator with tropical mod.

Radiator roded, Thermo fan in good nick and fit an engine monitor which bolts a probe onto the head. I have a vdo temp gauge and correct sender the difference between the engine monitor and vdo is + 10 degrees C . vdo reads 93 head temp 83, drops lower on long runs. Also flush out between Ac condenser and radiator. Amazing what critters and gunk get in there and restrict air flow. When running my aircon on my 300 tdi defender temp only went up 1+3 c so it was not an issue and that's flogging it up hills.

Radiator rodding , new viscous fan clutch , new thermostat and make sure hoses are good and expansion cap is working.

are you sure the sensor for your electric fans is working correctly? are the fans coming on? there should be two sensors on the u-pipe from thermo housing. i think one switches fans on at certain temp and the other switches AC off if temp goes too high. on mine the switch off AC plug has been removed as i think there was an issue in the past either with sensor or wiring. so basically as soon as i turn on AC the fans kick in and stay on. if i plug the plug in, the ac just does not come on.

maybe have a look at these. try and see if the electric fans come on.

The system will cool enough without the fans working if its all in good nic.

My 300tdi runs about 4C hotter with the AC on......I think that's to be expected.

Ok. Mine jumps 10-12c hotter. Say from 86 / 88 to 100 /102 even on mild days. I've flushed the system over the past 6 months, inserted a new thermostat and I grabbed a reco rad and cleaned it all up about 6 months ago. I've just ordered silicone hoses. Will check the thermo fan.

Make sure the electric fans come on with the AC.

I'll second what Loanrangie said. I've just been through this with my disco 300tdi. It was fine around town however towing or not on one or two of the hills around the Bathurst area the disco would get hot pulling up them.

I was towing my camper down the south coast in January so I wanted it sorted as I'd be using the aircon cause my missus isn't much of a windows down kind of gal.

I had my radiator rodded some time ago which helped but didn't completely fix the issue.

The plastic shroud over the top of the radiator broke and had been missing for some time, at the advice of Bruce Davis I sought out a 2nd hand one from a wreckers but they are as rare as hens teeth so I have a local fab shop make one out of aluminium and it screws on, looks good and is way stronger than the plastic one.

The issue was better but still not perfect.

Next step I just bought a new viscous fan and hey presto, all fixed, made a huge difference to the general running temp as well. Went from running at around 90 degrees around town to just above 80 during general driving.

I looked into larger radiators, thermo fans etc etc in the end the best investment you can put in is good hoses, thermostat, viscous fan and get the radiator rodded.

Flushing doesn't do much with the disco's cause the veins run horizontally instead of vertically so flushing them only gets so much out.
