Discovery I - ABS Blink Code Procedure
Tom
Hey Guys....
I noticed the other day when I was coming down a hill and I had to suddenly brake hard at a set of traffic lights that my ABS light came on and stayed on from that point on. I stopped further up the road and checked the brake fluid level and it was on the minimum level mark so I thought that was it. I got home and topped up the brake fluid level and then went for a drive to see if I could cause the problem to happen again, which I was able to do.... Normal driving is fine with no problems, it only happens on downhill with hard braking, otherwise all is good with normal braking..... It easily resets by turning the engine off and back on.
Anyone with ideas as to what might be causing this as I don't think there is too many '96 model Disco Tdi's with ABS?

Fantastic, Thanks Tom..... I know nothing about the Early ABS's, so I'll check out this procedure as soon as I can....
I'm assuming I'll have to redo the downhill braking to create the ABS light to come on before I carry out this procedure or does it store the error codes?
This is why this is a great site for us beginners![]()
Hi Rob, the error will be logged so no need to re-create it. Just go through the blink procedure and that will give you a start. Once it is fixed, don't forget to clear the errors.

I've had my 96 Tdi since 98. Had this issue a number of times over the years and each time has been the lead breaking continuity right on the top of the wheel sensor. My fix was to dig out the soft top of the sensor to expose wires, solder back togeather then put an inch of clear plastic tube around sensor, fill with sicaflex along with another couple of inches of flexible conduit with the lead running through it all. That way as the wheel moves the lead is better supported without such a hard flex point to eventually break.
But....now you can get the complete sensor and lead for the front for about $80 on Ebay so don't think I'd bother to repair now. Was well worth doing when they were $700 each though.

Just wondering here.... but is there a way to totally disconnect this ABS &/or stop it from working and w/o seeing the ABS light on the Dash? I've never really liked the way the ABS operates offroad and if there was a simple way of immobilizing it some way, I might be interested..... as long as normal braking is not effected obviously ???

Just be aware that pulling the fuse or dissabling the abs will make you legally liable in an accident. When the authorities examine the vehicle all insurances are denied and you're liable for the lot.... Just saying.
