sorry if this has been asked amillion times, i have just gotten a 93 land rover discovery with the 3.9 v8i and the bloke i got it off said it has a brand new fuel pump but he parked it up for a couple of days and it stopped working. ive seen around that people put external fuel pumps on these can i do that without removing the existing fuel pump from the tank?
thanks in advance for your help

Not sure why you would want to fit an external pump, the internal pump is really easy to get out via a hatch under the load area carpet. External pumps need a very good inlet flow without restriction or they cavitate and die very quickly. You would have to drill and tap a 1/2" hose elbow into the bottom of the tank and hang the pump off that.

If you decide to look at the in tank pump, it's just a generic Ford/Holden pump with a special long flexy outlet hose. If the pump has been replaced by someone who doesn't know about submersible fuel hose, there's a good chance they've used ordinary hose instead which has burst. If the original flexy hose is missing you will need to get some proper submersible EFI hose, about $30 a foot from ebay.

Another common fault with these cars is that a dying pump overloads the electric connections to the pump, either at the pump housing or above the rear resonator under the floor. Pull these connectors apart and look fore blackened nylon around the pins.

It usually takes me under 1/2 hour to undo a gas tank enough to tilt it aside to get access to the pump hatch. If you can't manage to do that you'll find dropping the petrol tank takes a little longer. The connections are exactly where I said in my first post. Almost every other more bodgy fix will actually take more effort than doing it properly.

You will only have 12v for a couple of seconds after you turn the ignition on. It might read about 5v after that. The ecu won't give it full volts until it senses the engine has started.

May be worth checking to hear if the relay is kicking on or not too. Drivers side footwell is where it lives. Turn the key on to acc, should hear it click on then off 3-5 sec later. Cycle the key off then acc again and it will do it again. Easy place to start

yea the relay clicks but its more of a click click and that's it. its not a click and then another a few seconds later. found the intra switch which was in the stupidest spot I have fat hands so wasn't fun trying to get to it :-/ and that was pushed down so ruled that out. ill just bite the bullet and check the pump on the weekend.
