    Unhappy 98 tdi auto

Has anyone on this forum have any idea why my auto box wont shift down when stopping at traffic lights or when slowing down? stays in 3rd and takes off in 3rd unless you punch kickdown forcefully and after driving it also wont go into reverse unless you go through all the gears manually. Tia. ps it has just hit 305000 ks.

Check that the kickdown cable has the correct amount of slack and not broken, fluid level is at correct height ?

Does it shift down when you change manually?

It's probably the valve block. The reverse issue is fairly characteristic.

Try adjusting the kickdown first, but this won't be the reverse problem.

What is likely happening is that the valve block is gummed up, which means the reverse interlock and actuation valves are not depressurising. When you cycle through the gears, you do this manually.

I used to have the repair manuals for these, and still have a spare gearbox, but most of the literature I had is sitting in backups somewhere.

With those Kms on it may be getting towards the end of its life. It all depends on how it has been maintained previously.

A full flush and fluid replacement using Wynns or similar, may get you another 30k or 40k Kms out of it. Google Wynns Auto Flush, there are several places in Brisbane.
