Brown sticky sludge at bottom of fuel pump

So finally got around to pulling out my busted fuel pump today and there was thick sticky sludge at the bottom it was almost like caramel the previous owner said he put a new fuel pump in thinking the nutter left some sort of packaging or something at the bottom and that's what's caused it to stop working. Has anyone ever seen this before? The filter at the bottom was also crusty and hard to bend or move around is it supposed to be like that?

Water in the fuel. Either from a dunking, poor sealing cap or contaminated fuel from an open drum. Can also be due to use of ethanol containing fuel and a break in the tank vent system. You'll have to drain the tank completely and wipe it out. Fill with fresh fuel from a good service station or sealed cans only.

Thanks mate I attached a picture are you able to tell me if a hose or something is meant to attach to the top of the pump because there was nothing on there thinking water could have gotten in that way.

That's a pump to suit a 1994-98 P38 Range Rover. It's identical except for that breather hose connection, definitely a quick path for moisture to enter the tank. A plastic chair tip from the hardware would be better than nothing, unless you can find a suitable blanking cap from an auto parts store. A short length of breather hose and a plug would do it too.

Well then guess he installed the wrong type then, I have a 93 discovery. I will be replacing the whole lot with the proper part.
