    Upcoming Radio Installation issues...

Hi Guys. I'm really enjoying my 1997 Tdi - been on a couple of decent drives and she's behaving herself very nicely.

I've been looking for a GPS system as well as Bluetooth so I can bring it into the 21st century and have purchased this little fellah Universal 7 "Touch Screen HD dvd player car audio GPS navigator 1din stereo audio DVD automotivo 1 Din car radio audio stereo-in Car Multimedia Player from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group - it gets good reviews and should fit nicely. I also bought a suitable reversing camera and the whole issue's going to cost $220 AUD delivered. It's going to take a few weeks to arrive so I am just getting my ducks in a row as to installation.

Now, my electrical skills are limited to connecting wires together and not necessarily understanding how they work. Is installation as easy as identifying which wire goes where and connecting it up to the new radio?

I removed (just for a little lookie) the standard radio with a modified coat hanger and that was easy enough. It has a connector in the back of the radio which goes to a big black connector. This connects to another connector which has two smaller connectors plugged in to it. I think I have found a wiring diagram that lets me know what's what.

I am not sure if my car has an 'amp' or where it is if it has one. I think it used to have a CD changer but there's just a big hole under the seat where it used to live. I put 'Amp' in inverted comma's as I'm not sure what an amp is!

Do we reckon I could just identify the wires to the big black connector, cut them off and connect them to the corresponding wires on the new radio? I don't suppose my standard radio/cassette will ever work again but I can live with that.

Thank for all of your help and advice - this place has given me the confidence to fiddle with things I would otherwise not!

    Dave

Nowadays, most of the wiring for radios is fairly standard. There should be (if it isn't the same as the existing plug) an adapter available. Once you get the new unit, pull the old one out and compare the plugs. Most car audio installers will have a range of adapters to suit various installations. The other plugs you mentioned would most likely be the speaker wires.

    Hope that helps a bit

Because of the large number of old D1s around and the fact that even the wrecked ones still have wiring looms in them, it maybe worth the effort to find one and cannibalise that so you can avoid cutting your loom. It would also make the install easier as you will not be head down bum up inside the dash void trying to join (solder) wires.

    just a thought.

    Thanks Don,

I'll go and have a look around some audio places - maybe there'll be one that actually just plugs in. Mind you, it would probably be more expensive than my new radio was!

I was down in Warwick last weekend in the Disco - we hid a Geocache at Queen Mary Falls a couple of years ago and we think some bugger half-inched it. Had to hide a new one. What a lovely part of the world. Whenever we go to Stanthorpe we always seem to stop in Warwick RSL for lunch

I bought an adapter for the SIL a while back, by memory it was about $6.99
We'll be away most of April - going to Melrose and back, but next time you're coming through let me know and I'll meet you at the RSL

Good thinking. The handy thing about having two connectors in place is that I can remove it from the vehicle to do all the soldering on the bench. All there seems to be sticking out of the new radio is wires so I guess I will just have to identify all the existing wires, solder 'em up, plug it in and keep my fingers crossed.

    What could possibly go wrong...

The bundle on the left looks like the hookup for amp, reversing camera, etc. Middle is gps receiver. Right side bundle is the one you want to compare the plug on the end with the existing plug in your current radio. If the same, just plug your existing one in and try it out. If not the same, that is where the adapter I'm talking about comes in. Most are fairly standard (about the only advantage I've found with globalisation).
The JVC radio I bought in Supercheap a couple of years ago plugged straight into the existing harness in my D1.

That's very encouraging, thank you - fingers crossed. The seller just emailed me to let me know that it doesn't work with an existing amp - the wires have to go straight to the speakers so that means it ought to be a very straightforward install, even if it doesn't plug straight in.

Just have to be patient waiting for it to arrive now - that's the only drawback f ordering from Alibaba.

I'll be interested in how you get on with it - could be a possibility for mine as well.

I put a top of the range Sony system into my D1 a couple of years ago. Supercrap had the wiring in stock. Virtually plug and play.
