Spare wheel and jerry can holder

Currently planning a trip across the Simpson next year and wondering what others have done about carrying a second spare and jerry cans.
A swing away rear bar would be nice but they seem to cost more than the D1!
    Any suggestions?

This will no doubt start an argument, as it always does. I don't believe in adding weight to carry jerries. Put 'em on the roof, and use them first. Weight is then off the roof, and you haven't added heaps of weight of unwanted jerry carriers. Empty jerries weigh nothing, and yet you have many KGs tied up in carrying them. Does that make sense? All this assumes you'll have a roof rack. Seriously though? Why add weight to carry something that will spend most of the journey empty? Diesel is far better off in the tank than it is in a can, so get it in as soon as you can.

If it's water you mean, it needs to have a permanent, never to be overlooked, place in your vehicle. Nothing wrong with carrying extra, wherever you put it. Carry more water than fuel. If you plan the trip properly, you'll know roughly how much fuel you'll need. You can never plan for water. If you break something, your fuel requirement doesn't change, but your water requirement sure does.

Sorry, you probably know all that..

If you build in extra jerry carriers, build them to carry water, not fuel. You can't drink diesel.

Yes, it is for water predominantly as I have 145 litres capacity for dino juice.
I'm also considering a bladder tank on the rear passenger floor.

OK. It's an issue, isn't it? Carrying water everywhere that is even remotely considered desert is problematic. But you have to consider weight. What is non essential? Got kids, everything changes. I'll shut up now.
Heaps of folk here have done what you intend, and I only replied on the basis of the name of the thread. Have a great trip. Take Mario's ( Roverlord ) PM details with you.

All good John, I'm always happy for another opinion.
It will just be me and Squirrel (16 y.o. son) so we won't be too pushed for space.
I'm sorting out the roofrack at the moment, and looks like we will take the Oztent for shelter as it's light enough to go up top.

I managed to snag a rear swing-away Kaymar bar with double jerry can holder and spare tyre for really cheap for my D1. Keep an eye out as they do pop up occasionally for less than a D1 is worth! I have used the extra Jerry can holder for either water or fuel on several occasions.

Late last year I bought an 85L water bladder which sits on the floor in the rear footwell. I also carry a few 10L containers as extras, and for ease of use. I can highly recommend these bladders. They don't take up much room and the weight is kept nice and low. Handy hint: I wrapped my rubberised rear cargo mat (bought from Bunnings for $40), around the bladder before wedging it in. This stopped any chafing on the seat rails, etc. Well worth is as I drove lots of corrugations on my last trip and the mat had some wear points when I got home, which probably wouldn't have done the bladder any favours.

I also remove my rear seats on big trips to maximise stowage and lose a bit of weight. When required my second spare goes on the roof rack although I usually try and keep the top free of any heavy stuff. Anyhow, enjoy your trip and post up a report when you can.

I do this also. Amazing how much the rear seats take up if their not needed.

Is there a specific older model swing away bar that you picked up to look out for? I too wouldn't mind one of these, although I'm sure the bar itself is kind of heavy too. I agree with keeping heavy stuff off the roof though, apart from making things more top heavy than they already are I really wouldn't want to be getting a spare wheel off the roof, I'm sure that wouldn't be very good for my back!

I bought the kaymar bar off a forum member but didn't get a model number as such. It has 2 jerry can holders, spare tyre attachment and an extendable LED rear/camp light. A nice solid piece of kit that has served me very well. See pic below.

If it helps, the sticker attached says:
    Manufacture date - Apr '99,
    Make - KALD
    Towing capacity - 4000kg
    Ball load - 120kg (?)
    Ph (03) 9870-4419

As for the second spare tyre, when I go bush, it currently sits on the roof rack. Not too thrilled about this as combined with the Roof Top Tent I'm pushing the roof limit as far as weight goes - and my back if I ever need to get the bloody thing down! Going from a Defender to a D1 does make for creative use of space though! I'm toying with DeanoH's idea for carrying the second spare (see link below).
The first post on the second page has links with some more photos of his setup.

Only pic I could find of my rear-bar on this computer is from Cape Leveque last year and shows it fully open from a side view. Sorry about the crap quality!
If you need a better photo, PM me and I will take a couple of snaps and email them to you.
