Replacing engine and transmission oil pipes 300 Tdi Disco 1 Auto

Greetings all. I am planning to replace the engine oil cooler pipes and transmission oil cooler pipes on my 98 TDI 300 Disco Automatic tomorrow. I have poked around on this site and have been able to find very little, though that may be down to my poor searching abilities, rather than lack of content.

All of the pipes seem to be leaking from point where rubber and metal pipes connect. I have new "o"rings ready and new pipes .

Replacing the engine cooler pipes seems reasonably straight forward and I have found some info on this site. I'm less sure about replacing the auto transmission pipes.

    Questions:

    1. Do I need to drain the auto gearbox before disconnecting hoses?

    2. If I don't do 1- will auto transmission fluid pour out of the gearbox? I understand the fluid capacity of the auto transmission is around 20L.

    3. Any special tips/ traps for new players

Any help will be much appreciated.

You will drop some oil when you disconnect hoses and beside the potential mess, I don't see it as a issue. Just make sure the trans oil level is correct when your done.

Theres nothing wrong with the pipes,, just the stupid LR joins.
This is still a problem on the D2's ( and 3's!!)

a mobile Pirtek guy will fix it properly.

I think the auto fluid capacity is about 9-10lt.

If you haven't done a trans service, either at all or recently, it will pay to do one when you're doing what you're about to do(ie. cooler lines)

As AK83 said, do a service whilst you're at it. Mario (Roverlord on this forum) does a pan gasket and filter kit for a good price.

There is a thread on this site "P38 transmission cooler in a D1" which covers replacing the oil lines - I followed the route of using the push-on fittings when installing a P38 cooler in my D1 about 4 years back to cure the leaking hose problem and have had no issues since.

    Cheers
