    300tdi tuning

    G'day,
I have finally got brave enough to have a go at playing with the injector pump on our rather lethargic Disco, as per Ian Petersen's suggestions elsewhere on this forum, and it made a world of difference......very addictive! However, I believe there is some risk of disaster to engine internals, so I would be interested to hear whether anyone has damaged their motor after doing this, or whether the result was a reliable long term improvement.
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Woolly.

If you haven't done so already, before you start playing around with the tuning too much, make sure you have an EGT gauge installed. It will save you in the long run.

As cripes said, an EGT gauge is a must, and yes, the car goes much better but I've done two sets of big ends in the last ten years and cracked a piston.
One set I really do think were dodgy, most end of model run Tdi's did big ends or cranks, the bearing failure was commensurate with a dodgy run of shells, but the second set and cracked piston was entirely due I believe to excessive cylinder pressures due to the extra fuel + slightly advanced injection timing.

I subsequently nudged the fuel back a a touch after the new pistons/head/injectors/bearings went in.

If you want more grunt, jack up the radiator cap, and drive a V8 under it

Seriously, they are not a performance motor by a long shot! I'm quite happy with 9.1 l/100 klms fully loaded, and cruising at 90 - 95 kph, keeping an eye on EGT's and water temps. V8 petrol, or up a model to a TD5 if you're after more of a high-speed tourer.

Thanks for the prompt replies. We are doing a trip in it starting this Thursday so I will back it off a bit until I get an EGT gauge installed. Glad I recorded the original settings.

Backed off the adjustments to about 2/3 of what was recommended and still very happy with improvement in performance.....about 10 kms faster at the top of my local test hill. Just returned from 5700km trip across Simpson, both ways, and the Disco was great, no worries at all except a rock through the windshield, which could happen to anyone, so I'm very happy. Egt gauge coming this week, so then I'll be happy and safe.

Simplest thing to make it drive better is to fit a single box, wider bore sports exhaust. No risk at all of damaging the engine but boy does it make it go better, much reduced turbo lag, etc. And you save fuel too. Mine is stainless which matters in the UK as rust is an issue here. Sounds good too! Just remember an internal combustion engine is just another heat pump. So, remove resistance and the pump pumps easier!
