    DISCO Tdi300 ALTERNATOR has failed....

    Hey Guys.....

Looks like the bearings in my ALT have finally given up as the noises coming from the Alt is pretty bad. So, I'm in the market for a 2nd ALT to replace mine. Not sure if there is anyone on here that live in the Brisbane area that might have a spare one sitting in their garage/shed that they might want to sell??

Also, I believe there might be other vehicles out there that run a similar type of ALT that will also bolt on, does anyone know of what vehicle that would run the same type of ALT?

    cheers....

    Rob

If you're handy with the tools a 3.9 V8 one can be adapted, you have to fiddle with the front housing and swap the pulley. No rewiring required. My mate bought a RRC V8 with a new alternator fitted, seemed a shame to chuck it when the diesel went in instead.

A defender owner might have his 70amp sitting in the shed from when he upgraded to a disco alternator....that would be a backward step but get you out of trouble.

    Question

Waiting on a bloke to get back to me on Monday, otherwise it looks like I'll have to go down the path of a new one if that doesn't pan out

I had an easy way out with a brand new one at my local parts supplier for my 300 Tdi.
They could get one same day for just under $400 for me, so I took up the option.

All the leckies wanted $350 for a simple rebuild(bearings and electronics, but not rewinding) ... so I though for an extra few $s better off with new.

Turned out to be an OEX brand, which I was suspicious at first, but it's been great so far. Much better voltage output than the original one too .. at least 0.5v better all round.

Only had mine for 35K klms as yet(1 yr).

If your interested, the model number for the OEX is 439468.

    OEX catalog link.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

Time wise is a bit of an issue. Not sure too, how long I’ll be keeping the Disco once I’m happy with the defender’s reliability, so that’s why I was looking for a 2nd hand one.
If I can’t find a 2nd one, then I’ve got choice but new and I know MR Auto have new ones in stock for around the $290-$300 mark.

If you are able to replace the bearing yourself it will only cost you a few dollars and a new set of brushes won't break the bank either.
$350 sounds excessive for this simple work.

That`s fine if the bearing has not chewed the casing out and or other damage
It would pay to strip it down first as it is not a hard job to replace bearings and brushes if it is repairable

I'm assuming to pull it apart u also need to de-solder the Winding Wires from the Rectifier along with everything else?

I do plan to pull it apart, but part of my thinking (rightly or wrongly) was to buy a replacement one, then attempt to repair the one I have and then I have a future spare for either my Defender or Disco....
