D1 V8 Infrequent Rough Idle fixed by Pulling plug on MAF

    Hi to all.

Any ideas on the following. Disco 97 3.9 V8 auto. At some point I start getting the rough idle issues. I stop the car and disconnect the plug on the MAF and reconnect. Restart the engine and runs like a dream Until next time it gets the rough idle again. Can be days. Ive replaced the MAF with genuine but no difference. It's almost like it's resetting something in the ecu when I pull the plug on the MAF ? Starting to get annoying, so any insights would be appreciated.

I've owned the truck since new. IAC valve is clean, vacm hoses ok and T-piece into plenum clear. The vacuum advance is working ok. Has a near new fuel pressure regulator.

Is the pipe work from the charcoal canister in the side of the plenum or is it in the casting for the IAC valve? There was a bulletin about rough idle and the charcoal canister entering the intake needed to be moved

Woko the pipe from canister goes to the side of the plenum, centre hole of three holes.

That will be your problem. The rough running will be when the charcoal canister is purging. I'm at work tonight but I'll take a photo of where the canister needs to be moved to and if I can find the bulletin I'll post up

It does sound like the MAF is faulting causing "limp home" mode to be engaged. Limp home is cleared once you shut down the engine and restart, so long as the condition that caused it is no longer present. I'd be investigating the pins and wires on the MAF plug for cleanliness and tightness. It might even be worthwhile finding a second hand MAF plug off a wreck and soldering it to your loom.

One fix is to get a pair of long nose pliers and twist the blades on the MAF connector a little teeny bit so that there is a better contact with the plug.

Bulletin number is 0005. Engine stalling and rough idle.
Part number for kit is STC4109.
I put a barbed fitting into the old housing rather than buying a new housing.

Woko thanks for posting the pic and details.

I've never heard of this modification before. Was the bulletin 00005 dated a long time ago and if so, should Landrover have fitted this kit during a routine service back in the early days when I took the car to them for service ?? Should it have been at no charge as part of SRS recall just like other work they did ? If so I will raise the issue with them.

Its dated in 98. It's on rave. It's a technical service bulletin. They only get done if the problem occurs. They are not mandatory.
