D1 300TDi Manual with engine issue

My friend has a D1 300TDi that is using oil and blowing smoke. No mechanic has any clue about Land Rovers around him and is too afraid to look at it.

Does anyone know if it is difficult to do a compression test on the 300Tdi? I assume you can just remove the glow plugs and check like on a TD5? Also does anyone between Narre Warren and Trafalgar have a compression tester to suit that I could borrow for a weekend or who would be willing to test if for us?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Using oil and blowing smoke are signs of rings and or bore
Speak to Mars a couple of gaskets a hone and some rings and big ends and a weekend should see you right if the bores are not too bad and all at a good price no doubt

Yeah, that is what i'm hoping for. But I just want to be sure before pulling it all to bits. The engine has only done 150,000 kms since new. I suspect it has been dusted, so cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 will be buggered.

I am nowhere near the area you have in mind, but i do have a compression tester suitable for a 300tdi. I am willing to lend. Or if you can limp it up my way i can help with the test.

Yes it is just a matter of removing the glow plugs and inserting the tester.

I would be checking the turbo in cas you have blown a seal and its leaking into the intake. Easy job pull hose off going to inter cooler and see how mush oil is in it.

It does have oil in the cooler, apparently lots. It does fume pretty badly, I've asked him to send me the video of it fuming. By fuming I'm assuming you are referring to what I know as blow by. But i guess it is not blow by if the rings and cylinders are not worn.

Does this suggest a turbo failure?

I forgot to mention the sump is being pressurised. There is no water in oil or oil in water. If the turbo has failed, it is possible the boost is pressurising the sump?
