I decided to recheck the valve clearances and they were out by a gnats nut but very likely enough to drop compression
and put the fire out.
Now I've dug down the water pump is definitely the cause of the leak.
Unfortunately whilst hoofing on the ratchet to turn the engine (even with the glow plugs out it was awkward) the ratchet came off and all the grunt effort
applied to it directed itself into one fan blade the fan shroud and various areas of skin. Guessing the radiator will have to come out to fix that.
Its rego has run out last week and as I've no more cash to spend on it (or patience) and all the other issues its had (mainly electrics) I'm about ready to ditch it.
Edit.
After I cooled off a bit I went and had another look.
In an ideal world the top mounting plate comes off the radiator and there's reasonable access to the fan and viscous coupling. I have a 32 mil spanner previously bent
to match an XF Falcon water pump. This almost fit except for the pulley mounting bolts being a tad close.
Easy peasy, I'll back those off a bit, slide the whole thing forward and undo the fan.
Only to find some chimp has been in there before me, all four of the mounting bolts have been rounded off and the coupling hex has something that looks like a cold chisel mark
in it.
Lucky I have some Bourbon!

Victory!
Finally got everything back together (still waiting on the replacement fan) turned the key and she's now purring like a kitten
(A big white smelly slightly oily kitten)
I'd redone the valve clearances, number 2 exhaust was well out. Guess I missed it first time around.
Replaced the water pump and no leaks. Changed all the radiator hoses while I was in there.
While I was waiting for the bits to show I took to the electrical system to fix all the nasties the previous owners had done to her.
She now has working dual batteries with a very nice change over relay, the electric trailer brake set up works, all the lights come on and off
when asked the UHF is wired to a fuse not direct wired to the battery and the anderson plug now has wiring that will carry the load and not ignite
in an overload. I wired up for some spotties that'll go on when I can afford a decent set.
Thank you again for the assistance Gentlemen, your help has been invaluable.
