Been reading up on later V8s and from what I can gather, some of the issues with the 3.9/4.0 litres overheating could be due to bad castings of the block, where the internal coolant gallery is not centred in the metal wall.
So the aluminium cracks .. seemingly looking like a liner problem. This issue appears to be with the later motors(but I think this means more likely D2 V8s less so D1 era .. dunno).
But later doesn't always equate to better. Hopefully in your situation tho it will!
