    I get it now

    Well for years I never understood why any sane person in Au would be into Land rovers.
    Now I understand after a mate sold me his 93 Disco his partner bought new ,then sold it to him who after buying a new radiator and still losing water so he eventually bought a new car.
    Thus after his Disco sitting for 6 months with the dash in the back he was told to dispose of it so it came my way for $250 with the dash loose in back.
    So new heater core and some fine swearing as I had not pulled it to bits so made putting it together a bit of an issue, but now have had her for a couple of years.
    So apart from some really stupid Brittish mechanical idears I have to admit they are pretty good. So after numerous, coils,hall effect switches etc I found the missing link.
    As stated by others “Lucas disease”
    So thanks to others for their convert to Bosch ignition info I have cured it.
    Mind you this 3.5L petrol 8 has done over half a million km yet still within specs as had the LPG option fitted when new.
    She recently showed up the opposition when a Friends 4wd ute was bogged with a Toyota Troupe tied to it which was unable to move it. The Disco pulled both out without missing a beat.
    She has more traction than a Grey Fergie tractor and can see myself doing an engine rebuild in near future to get some more grunt for towing.
    But for $250 was a good investment.

    Gday and Welcome to the forum

    Ahh the old Lucas disease , atleast it is curable , only takes some plastic , usually in the shape of a C/Card ,or some paper , usually in the size and shape of $$$ , and all is good.

    Sounds like you may have a case of the green oval disease now.

    When i first purchased mine i was furious. Got it bogged over and over.

    Even complained like a little girl on the forums here somewhere

    Open diffs mean you only really have 1 wheel pulling at any time. 2 if you lock the CDL. Certainly the case when you loose traction.

    Most other 4x4s have an LSD rear so basically they have an extra wheel turning. In the mud/wet grass this can at times be the difference!

    This was a real issue for me at the beginning. Was really dirty about it. Was going to junk the car based on that alone actually.

    That said over time i worked out how to drive the girl. Knowing her limits helps a lot. But also knowing her strengths. Articulation for example.

    Bigger tyres, lockers and all that good stuff helps a lot more but is quite expensive.



    Stepping back and taking off my land rover hat for a second.

    Head to head stock my 94 D1 versus my wifes 97 Jackaroo. ALSO.
    Head to head stock my 94 D1 versus my mates 99 Prado.

    In stock form tackling hills of mud or grass for example. Both cars would outperform mine. Simply because of that extra wheel getting some traction.

    Now all cars are modified well the D1 absolutely obliterates them. Yes i have modified mine way beyond there mods but none the less..........

    Land Rover hat back on now.

    Tinker with a Disco and set her up for the trips you like to do and there tough. Bloody tough.

    I went from hating my car to absolutely adoring it.

    I literally talk to her! Although that may be somewhat related to me being slightly nuts.......

    I talk to mine all the time. Don't we all? That's totally normal, right? She's taken me and my family to some amazing places, and back again and has gratitude heaped on her regularly for doing so. Other discussions tend to occur while I am reparing, modifying, tinkering though... esp after some sacrificial blood letting.

    I get it now

    I came to Landies from a 99 rodeo, Lwb Suzuki Sierra and a Pajero. Found my classic rangie outperformed them by a good margin. Have 2 d1’s now, one locked f&r, found even my std unlocked was more than equal to mates patrols and cruisers (much to their disgust). Add twin lockers and it does it easy I get it now

    '95 D1 V8 auto......gone
    '86 V8 RRC.....gone

    I came to Landy’s via old Subaru’s and extensive experience driving Landcruisers and Hilux’s for work in northern Australia. I’ve always loved the iconic design of Series/Defenders and when I drove my first Defender I couldn’t believe the difference from Tojos!

    The visibility all around for a start; The ride and handling of four coils with disc brakes all round; the nimbleness in comparison to kidney killing dumb thumping ride of Tojos; the lack of wasted space; the lack of superfluous bulges and plastics and fluff; and yet the way the vehicle almost hugs you; the low centre of gravity from massive steel chassis and aluminium body; the pragmatic interior; the fuel economy!; The aesthetics; the ‘roving’ slow down and ‘smell the flowers’ shift in mindset; the fraternity / waves, etc etc ...I’m having trouble stopping writing!

    Clearly Defender was and is the vehicle for me...to the point where I bit the bullet and took a loan I can’t really afford a loan to buy a late model Defender before they stopped making them AND I can’t part with my 20 year old trusty Tdi AND I’d like many more older models but can’t afford them!

    Needless to say, I talk to mine too. It’s totally normal. IME Defenders are the only vehicles that engage in a conversation beyond ‘go’ or ‘stop’ LOL.
