    A new noise?

    Hi All,

300Tdi Discovery, 418,000 km and a new noise in recent months. A sort of buzzing noise, related to road speed and load. That is, is goes quieter on overrun then comes back under load.

It seemed to go a bit quieter after I greased the uni-joints so I suspected the front shaft joints were getting tired. But I've just dropped the front prop shaft and the joints seem perfect. Smooth, no play, no notchiness at all. However, when I rotate the front output shaft of the transfer case back and forth the few degrees it will move, it feels a bit notchy. Could this be the source of my new noise and if so, what does this indicate? Or is this just normal gear backlash I'm feeling?

STOP PRESS: While writing this, it's just occurred to me - with the front prop shaft disconnected and the centre diff unlocked, should I not be able to rotate the front TC output shaft easily? I've just checked and the diff lock lamp lights and goes out correctly but I can't turn the front flange when it's supposed to be unlocked. Could I have a 'permanently' locked centre diff??

    Thanks,
    Ian &

For the front output flange to turn, the gearbox or the transfer case must in neutral too.

Noises can be anything, and if there is a bearing failing somewhere I'd be hesitant to call it a "buzzing" noise.

D1 with buzzing noises ... normal!
(actually! .. any landrover with buzzing noises is normal)

But, on a more serious note, I've found that buzzing noises usually = internal vibrations of some metal/plastic interface, or plastic/plastic interface .. and even metal/metal interfaces!
Basically anything that is next to something else is capable of transferring vibrational energy, into audible energy!

So, for you it's under load where you hear one. For me it's usually with no load, or very light load .. I have a buzz from slap bang in the middle of the dash, just under the small rubber strip.
If I drive with a medium load on throttle or more .. it goes. On idle and on light load, it buzzes. If I put my hand on the small rubbery strip on the centre top of the dash , it also goes.
I've jammed some high density foam under the dash between the metal frame that is the radio and the underside of the dash .. no change.

I still remember the first 'most annoying' buzzy noise I tracked and eliminated in my D1(it's an auto tdi) .. the leatherette gaiter on the transfer lever. It wasn't the leatherette, it was the round cornered rectangular snap in part that hold the gaiter in place on the centre console.
Gave it a bit of hand one day whilst driving and it stopped buzzing. Jiggled it around lots whilst driving one other day to see if a better location would stop the buzzing, no go!
Pulled it, cleaned out lots of crud, and used some foam strips between the clip thing and the centre console .. haven't heard from it again in 60+K klms.

But then the driver side vent started buzzing shortly afterwards. more annoying, and only very specific conditions. Didn't know at the time what it was, and thought something wrong with the tdi. Only time this thing buzzed was with the engine running at 1750RPM.
I kid you not. Nothing else I could try would make this new buzz annoy me, other than that the tdi was at 1750RPM. Didn't matter if I was driving or sitting in the drive with a small slab of concrete maintain 1750RPM idle while I wasted a lot of time under the bonnet looking for things that buzz. Eventually found that it was the driver side inner vent flap. Impossible to reach into it, but after many many tries at various fixes, the only fix that stopped this one, was the good old hammer and tong method.
Tong placed carefully into the vent port(basically blindly) feeling for the spindle shaft that the vent flap rotates on, and WHACK! the spindle to deform it to tighten up the flap a little. Praying to god that I didn't totally seize the vent flap. Got that one good tho, and vibraty buzzy noise gone to god too ...

Until the latest one now under the centre of the dash.

Moral of the story: I reckon no matter what you find with this one, a new one will rear it's annoying audible presence later down the track, and it's usually not what you initially think it may be.
    Arthur.

The locking lever for the passenger front seat rail makes a buzzing noise on our D1 at higher road speeds.

I had a buzzing noise, changed with engine speed, drove me mad, turned out to be the mobile phone when on charge, the phone actually puts the noise through its speaker, new charger, problem solved.

    Thanks Bee-utey,

The illustrious JC also pointed out what an idiot I was, expecting the flange to turn if both the other shafts (rear output and input) were 'locked'...

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. The noise sounds mechanical as it varies in frequency with road speed and volume with load. Seems to be coming from the front half of the vehicle. Do CV joints buzz when they're worn?

Easy to check long shot ... really, really long shot.

Check the priming lever on the lift pump.
If they come loose off their locked position, they make a sort of buzzing/zingling sound .. sometimes.
