Todd, I think most of the auto issues were with D2s, same basic box but not interchangeable.
Once you've driven an auto, offroad, you won't want to go back to a manual.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

The zf 4 hp 22 will easily cope with a tuned 300 tdi
    Cheers discorevy!
    Good to know

A flaw that could lead to issues, or just something that's just part and parcel with driving a 300Tdi auto?

    Appreciate your comment mate.

only in the sense that its a mechanical hydraulic unit. You dont have to lock it down but doing so prevents it from hunting across gears if you wind up near a change point.

Did you have any mods specific to it being auto, like adding transmission oil cooling etc that's worth knowing about?
Also, did you put it through it's paces with challenging 4WD tracks?
For the most part I'll be doing pretty cruisey stuff, but this upcoming trip will be pretty hectic, so just want to make sure I'm/the vehicle is well prepared.

    Cheers heaps for your input!
Nothing added, the TDI isnt hard on the zf at all. Car was a daily driver, tow vehicle and off roader.
I never thrashed it but wasn't easy on it either. Cooling the TDI is more important than worrying about the auto.

Did 3 autos in ours in well under 300kkm. Car never went offroad or any heavy towing, lock up converter everytime let go, lunched the rest of the box.

Make sure the filter inside the gearbox is changed regularly or it can clog up, impede oil flow and cause wear. Previous owner had ignored it on ours. Ours needed a rebuild at about 260,000kms. Otherwise, it was great.

I don't think offroad is hard on autos at all.

Towing 3000Kg gin palaces is hard on autos.

Not changing down manually when towing is hard on autos. They don't like to lug along in too high a gear.

    Appreciate all the comments guys!

Unfortunately, the guy decided to sell it to someone else, even though he had agreed to hold for me to have a look when I got back home tomorrow.

Anyway....so I'm still on the lookout for a Series 1, 300Tdi (manual or auto), so sing out if you know anyone in Perth selling one.

    Thanks again!
    Todd.
