    ABS or no ABS

I know discussed many times here, but I'm still a bit confused. I have 1999 Disco 1 V8.
The master cylinder is leaking and I am about to order a new one. Brakes are soft and it pulls to the left when braking.
will also get new braided brake lines replacing rubber ones. Check pads etc. when bleeding.

After reading about ABS, I had a look for the part under bonnet for ABS, but can't find one.
So, did all late disco 1's have ABS in Australia. I need to check before ordering new master, but mainly, is there two different types, ABS or non ABS masters.

Any help appreciated, How to check if it has ABS or not. note. there is no ABS light on dash.

    hi ronski..
If you are not sure about brakes....book you car into a good brake service shop....get them to go over the whole system and repair as required....

it is just not worth the risk of getting this stuff wrong!!

the money spent is much cheaper than someones life....

    good luck... robbo

I am not in Australia, so I am not sure but my Asia Market 1997 has ABS. First check the under bonnet fuse box, if it has ABS there will be a fuse. If it does the pump is mounted on the inside rear of the front wing, passenger side. Unless there is a fault how do you know there is no dash light? The lamp may be blown, OR more likely, somebody has removed it so a fault does not show.

Not all late D1s have ABS.

My '96 has ABS, my '97 doesn't. It sits under the bonnet on the passenger side wheel guard about halfway along - in front of the washer bottle.

Thanks guys for all the help.
No ABS unit there. Had a closer look, brake lines run from master, along and down under car.

new master and hoses on their way, another fun weekend, weathers crap here anyway.
there is no ABS light on dash
I was thinking, if there, it would light when key turned on as with other warning lights.

Robbo, thanks, and do appreciate your concern, have rebuilt many brake systems over the years, trucks to bikes.

    Cheers.

    Nope!

Mine doesn't, and I waited for, what felt like an eternity, for my D1 to come to market before I bought one.
Almost all I looked at, at carsales and gumtree, and Fleabay .. almost all had ABS, and airbags. I wanted nothing to do with them, so had to wait forever to find mine .. no ABS, no airbag .. oh! and auto Tdi.

Seems like rare as hens teeth here in Aus, which kind of makes sense.
LR have pushed higher and higher into more prestige markets for a long while, not just now with their latest products.
With the push into a more prestigious market, the expectation will be that it will have luxury/safety stuff of this and that sort .. ABS and airbags would be no brainers for those types of customers.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

Our 1995 D1 300Tdi had ABS. It was an ES with options. Did base models not have ABS?
