I thought I would share this as it has been on my to-do list for a while - I replaced the gas strut on the rear step of my 1997 Discovery 300 Tdi. I got the gas strut from the manufacturer (Stabilus in Dingley VIC), their part number 9997RF (LIFT-O-MAT 9997RF/450N/K7/D7)
Really hard to get on - the gas strut is rated 450 Nm. Bolted one end to the end of the step and the other end to the L bracket, then used a clamp to compress the strut the right amount so that the long pivot bolt could go through. (Couldn't compress it by hand at all!) Then had to wiggle the step a lot to line the bolt up and go through the bushes and the arm of the tow bar.
I am very pleased with the result. Not sure if the short video attached or not , but it does make a good 'clunk' when it snaps shut. Haven't heard that sound in a very long time!
