I'd also recommend Mike. Lovely bloke who is a wealth of knowledge. That said, even he is having issues with a 300 TDi he rebuilt. Makes me feel better. Only person I pay money to on YT.

One other tip(depending if the 300 tdi is going to be a long term vehicle)
if you have gunk in the cooling system and there is a chance it's a bit rusty .. check the 3 long(lower) water pump bolts that bolt into the block.
If they rust, due to their length there can be a possibility they can snap when trying to remove them if the water pump needs attention.
Mine were very tight when I changed the waterpump .. and very very rusty on the shank. Quickly rushed to my local parts guy and got three new ones [thumbsupbig]
Well, after the best part of a very busy year, including VCE/year 12, two trips to Europe as part of the Australian Cycling Team, we're getting close.
Timing belt done, head is back on, radiator has been rodded, all the front lights and trim are back in.
We still need a pair of front seat belt buckles, new or second hand, none of the normal suppliers seem to have them.

Hi,
I have the remains of a D1 with the seatbelts in. They are a bit grotty but should clean up. If you just want the bits the tongues clip into you are welcome to them for the cost of postage.
Cheers,
Woolly.
Well it's going 😊
So we took it for a drive around the property, as you would.
Well it's been a bit wet in our part if the world.

So we loaded up my Haflinger (no way was I taking the Defender down there) with all the recovery gear I have, headed back to the Disco.
We dropped the Disco's tyres to 10 PSI, two boards under the drivers rear wheel, hooked up a snach strap, and out it came.
The ground were he got stuck is now like a bowl of jelly, it has just lost all its strength, were as the surrounding ground is just soft.
I know this is what this soil does when waterlogged, but to see it is quite an eye opener.
Roadworthy is booked for Wednesday.

Well it's registered.
Still little things for him to sort out.
Aircon not working
The radio and centre part of the dash rattle like no tomorrow.
I'm sure there will be other things to keep him occupied.
One last question,
We don't have a wheel brace, we are using a 28mm 6 point socket on the (worlds most stupid) wheel nuts, a 26mm socket on the wheel nut we stuffed the stainless cover on, and a 27mm on the spare wheel.
What should the car have for a wheel brace, given the spare has different sized nuts to the road wheels?
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.
Tony
I'd guess that someone has changed the wheel nuts(maybe).
Not sure, but I have the same wheels on mine(300tdi) but it has the coverless wheel nuts, same as the spare.
But with the stainless covers on, it still should use the same 27mm hex socket anyhow(like the D2 use) .. just don't take the covers off.
I have the wheel brace, but after a long drive the nuts can tighten a bit in high ambient heat(found out the hard way) and if you ever need to remove a wheel, you need to trampoline a lot on the small handled brace.
I got an extendable breaker bar(ratcheting type) from a cheap hardware place, for a half decent price, and makes it much easier to do, undo.
A bit later, I thought would be a half decent idea to also torque them up when doing them too .. so got a set of torque tubes off ebay, and keep the breaker, 27mm deep 6 point socket and 120Nm torque tube.
Wheel nuts are supposed to be 130Nm, but I figure 120Nm is close enough. Also the little bit of extension can be handy sometimes too.
