clunking sound coming to a stop

    Hi.
When coming to a halt, out of gear or clutch in, I get a clunking/chattering sound/vibration. It sounds like the clutch is partially engaged?
Anyone had this before? I just bought the car and was aware of it, clutch was changed a couple of years back.
    Thank you.

because you mentioned "out of gear" too .. I would say less likely to be a clutch issue.

could be a myriad of things, but I would start by removing the handbrake drum(assuming you do your own work) because it could be a free and easy fix.
pull the drum off, and check shoes for out of round wear, debris, oil contamination... mechanical stuff working ok, like springs ... etc.

Hi Vee One, hope your experience is less costly than mine. I had a similar noise and checked out all the obvious suspects myself, but it was finally correctly diagnosed by two indies as gearbox, and a rebuild cured it. Didn’t do much for the bank balance, though! Mine has done about 380k, so it’s probably longer than it was designed to last.
    Fingers crossed for you.

Had a case on a VicHigh trip once where one of our group experienced similar symptions.

Discovered that one of the pins holdinthe g the brake pads in was missing. When under brakes the pad was partly popping out and knocking on the lead balance weights on the wheel.

A piece of the trusty old fencing wire temporarily fixed the problem until a 'Landy Nut' was located near Corryong and was able to supply a correct replacement pin from one of the numerous Landy's parked in his paddock.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had time to investigate but hopefully not the g.b.
The clunk only only occurs when out of gear or clutch in and when down to a a 'fast-walk' speed, it doesn't present when in gear/being driven.

Before you go to too much trouble, adjust the handbrake as per the workshop manual. I had a similar problem occur in a 300TDI Defender and it turned out be the handbrake out of adjustment. I think about 1/2 a turn on the nut solved it.

You say out of gear, as in with the clutch engaged? So it makes the noise when whatever is rattling is not under load? How about uni joints in the prop shafts? Give the shaft a twist and shake, wheels chocked on flat ground handbrake off (to release and stress)…
