    I brokeded it ... 97 300TDi engine

6 month of Faithful service, a simple shopping trip, a slight hill and Jeep Noises

The result was a Valve let go and went crunchy crunchy with no warning, no smoke or loss of power.

On inspection I dont think its a simple head replacement sooooo now I need a replacement engine.

Valve train is fine BTW, nothing bent or loose with the only weirdness are witness marks indicating someone messed with the head studs possibly nipping them up (I dont know why either as the gasket was fine and mating surfaces are fine).

Soooo where does one find a 300TDi long motor?

I know people will question why bother but the 6 months I had I enjoyed even with the R380.

    Piccies to share the carnage.

Things to do and take piccies of ....

Rotate the dud cylinder to BDC and check the bore for nasties, From memory yesterday there were a few I could feel with my fingernail, I'd love to keep the block and replace the piston, conrod etc and source a head but if I can economically source a long motor even better and refurb it with all the goodies I bought for the broken TDi and fit that.

Im a bit each way about refurb or replace I guess.

Wow. So it's just dropped a valve?? Ain't seen that before on a 300.

Good 300TDis are getting thinner on the ground, so maybe look at the rebuild option. If the bore is ok then parts can be sourced fairly easily. Turners in the UK do affordable heads, with pretty quick delivery. Other parts as well. Pretty sure others will have local suppliers to recommend as well.

Don't listen to the naysayers. You like it, you keep it. 300TDi is a great little engine.

You might be able to get the block bored out 20 thou and fit oversize pistons.

The 300tdi is a pretty forgiving motor, so it's possible you could also just hone the damaged bore and see how it comes up.

    Yup, Dropped hard!

I get what you are saying about the 300TDi too, for a small displacement they are a mighty powerplant.
I'll look up Turners and see what they have, I have already checked Rimmer Bros.

Its just such a nice simple design.

After our quick chat I thought it was worth a follow up with pics :-)

Nice to know its forgiving and I was thinking a dunny brush hone and new piston as the cheaper option to get her going again with new valve train components but I need to have a good look at the bore, The injector and glow plug on the damaged cylinder were impossible to remove so I'll replace the lot while im at it regardless of rebuild or replace.

A bit under 480,000 km, Pump never messed with but I'll fit the EGT just incase there's a lean state as I cant figure out why the valve dropped.

Neither can I. Really only the collets or the stem has snapped.

Makes sense with the state of the head, injector and how the glow plug came out and my assumption of a lean state.
The Bosch pump wasnt fiddled with yet either, cap intact and from what I could see unmolested.

    Thanks

Collets intact and the stem looked pretty clean in the guides.

Head autopsy in the next few days anyway and as Dave mentioned above probable pump issues.

The stem still moves in the guide even headless.
