I was wondering if he was checking the crank pins for being rotationally even. I didn't see him doing it any other way.

The crankshaft that broke was purchased from an English firm and I assumed that it was Chinese made. It turned out to be a 'Genmot' brand made in India. So, whilst anything can be repaired given enough resources, the lack of quality control may result in a less than perfect outcome.
